Not consciously and not with intent, but when I was done I did realize that I had done a caricature (sp?) of someone that I could not quite remember. So now you've helped me with the name. A couple of the others seem that way too: I think the big ape guy is channeling Ernest Borgnineofnine.....

Do you want the short reply or the long reply? 8D
The illo is for a contributed "letter" from characters on Spontoon Island: <http://spontoon.rootoon.com>
1930s: Some of "TailSpin" "Porco Rosso" "Tales of the Gold Monkey" and "Indiana Jones" (one of the artists liked seaplanes!)
But a main reason is that 1939 (World War 2) marks a main dividing line in how European/American culture works: After WW2, our society stands still (until cyberspace recently?) With the 1930s, we all 'kind-of' know how the 30s were from seeing old movies -- but it is a really different time, and anyone drawing or writing about that time has to do some research (and figure out how much ancient attitude to include). Now why would I force poor innocent writers and drawers to do research? 8)
Is that enough of an answer?

I think this last one works.
"Sorry about that."
It took a longish time for the URL button to upload its brackets in the message -- but once up and surrounding the webaddress it seems to work in the message.
Probably security stuff -- learning something new about FA every post. =)

I am not as much *into* following the history of Spontoon Island into the 40s (& WW2), but about 5 or 6 of the writers are, so they are trying to work out an approximate common timeline (so they can share story cross-overs). They assume a World War 2 that is much the same in broad effects, but different in some battles and details. Spontoon Island interacts more with the Pacific Ocean Great Powers. I expect that Spontoon Island WW2 stories will be done, tho they may be posted on their own website.
There will probably also be Nazis, in an Indiana Jones sort of way: secret bases, expeditions, agents, etc. To some extent, there already is: the "Amelia's Diary" already introduces some mild-mannered German agents, and it is no secret that Amelia and her dorm-mates are likely to be going in Spring break 1938 to the German colony and base of NeuSchwabenland (Antarctica). That trip is likely to be *interesting*.
