Continuing my postings about my dreamscape Andur. Ruling over his city and the territories and colonies that have grown over the last ten years is the Sultan of Andur. For more than twenty years he has sat upon its throne, and with the support of ministers, council of representatives he has tried to rule his kingdom to the best of his abilities. Also making up his ranks of supporters are the Newcomers who've arrived in his lands either by"The Ship" http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2401382/ or by other means. Although sometimes he views us as being as much a liability as a asset!
The Sultan's clan/ family has ruled Andur for over two hundred years. Before the arrival of his clan the city had been know as Malakar. Upon taking over the city by force of arms the city's name was changed to that of his clan's name of Andur. It is therefore ironic and tragic that the greatest threat to ever threaten Andur has it roots going back to the days of Malakar! http://www.furaffinity.net/view/805861/
While the Sultan's family did take Andur by arms, in the years since his family generally followed a path of diplomacy over military adventures. However with war looming between Andur and the Caliphate the Sultan has begun the process of preparing his country and his people to face the largest enemy force to ever threatened them.
In the Sultan's favor he has Dawn Fairmane http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1147768/ to plan the strategy and organize the forces and materials to make victory possible. He also has Harshek's http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2902950/ operatives providing invaluable intel from outside Andur's borders. Protecting Andur's access to the sea is the Sultan's navy which in recent years has grown significantly in size with the addition of Chen We's ships.
Also Andur is also lucky that it has many of the strongest mages in the world working for him. These include Jedel http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2941475/ and Siegfried the Ice Lord http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2821173/ who has thrown the Valhaullan Vikings support behind Andur's struggle. Also there are several other mages who are assisting the Sultan in the war effort.
Here are some sketches of the Sultan returning from maneuvers with General Fairmane and him practicing archery at the palace. Yes I know he is no spots in the top sketch I just didn't put them in since it is was just a quick sketch.

Great details as ever (armored hooves - ouch :D) , and the "historical" background is like the topping there ^^
Still, from a technology aspect - why are the bows there so short ?
Compared to the swords and hand axes they are quit ...poore developed, even for a (recurve ?)shortbow ?
I could image that some ideas from the "modern world" would lead to a bow like the hun composite bow.

Oh do not be fooled by the small size of the bows! It is only been in period after the Second World War that that modern materials have permitted recurve bows to power potential approaching that of the great Turkish and Muslim composite recurve bows! And I do not believe that even today most modern material recurve bows can give the same weight to power that Turkish bows did.
Back in the late 1980's Scientific American did a very extensive article exploring what went into making a Muslim recurve and why they got such amazing power for size and weight. They generally do not cast as heavy an arrow as a English style longbow but they more than made it up in velocity. Also Sir Ralph Payne Gallwey had a very nice treatise about Turkish bow in the back of his book "The Crossbow".

Yes, the coverage of the Turkish bow in "The Crossbow" is eye-opening and informative. Some of the distance records were astounding.
There is also a discussion of essentially the same design, using modern adhesives and materials,as well as tradition materials, in "The Bowyer's Bible", a three volume compendium by multiple authors, on the design and manufacture/construction of bows. It also has a few discussions of arrows, and, iirc, one article on bowstrings. Quite informative, though not easy to find. Again iirc, the composite bow articles are in volume 3.

I don't have Volume three but I do have Volume two. There is a very good article in it from Charles Grayson MD. I just forgot to list it as a possible reference source. Also several of the Osprey Men at Arms books cover various details concerning Middle Eastern archery.
I have considered making a composite bow of the Turkish type. Then getting a thumb ring and sipe so I can figure out how to shoot it properly. That should be entertaining for any observers, at least. I know the theory of shooting that way, but the practice is going to be something else. I've been shooting western style, off and on, for more than five decades. Hopefully I'll be able to hit the target.
It is interesting that you should mention that. Yes we have modern firearms; in fact some are in possession of Harshek's most trusted men who act as bodyguards for the Sultan carry them concealed. However us Moderns have decided to follow a different line of reason concerning this issue. Instead of providing modern firearms in the upcoming war we've instead decided to show Andur how to make firearms themselves. In particular cannon.
We've given the Andurian Army and Navy about a five hundred year head start by get a hold of the information necessary to build 12 pound bronze Napoleons. Andur already had the technology and knowledge to do large bronze castings and we've cooked up a cover for hiding the true intentions of what this bronze was going to be used for. Also when started exploring production of the 12pders we first built some small 1:10 scale models for testing. About half way through testing we realized we'd made ourselves a 1pd swivel gun.
Fortunately we've been able to acquire all the necessary materials to build the guns and make the blackpowder. Andur already had good copper and tin deposits within its borders, and sulfur has found in territories to the south. The real trick was finding saltpeter in quantity. Fortunately their is an island within a few days sailing that is nothing more than rocks, sea birds, and hundreds of years of bird poop! except for sailors stopping by occasionally for fresh sea bird meat no one has seen any real use to the island, and therefore raised no fuss when Andur claimed it. We've begun extracting the guano from the island for the saltpeter.
In the end the decision we made was that this had to be Andur fight and their victory. If they built tools of their freedom it truly would be their victory on the battlefield. Not them being our puppet. Also the cannon will work well with the construction of new naval vessels being built specifically to carry them. Except for a couple ex-Soviet mortars that will be used in a Vahaullan Viking raid on Basra this will be with all 14th century built equipment. Hope this reply is not too long for you.

Oh yes! In our household there are at least 90 to 100 of them in both my library and
Rindis own collection.

Actually
Rindis did a quick count after I posted and just counting Osprey books we had about 120. Not including the dozens of other history books we have in our house library.
