What the hell have I gotten myself into . . .
Hmm, not sure if this is good or bad.

I think that you've gotten into a good care. The lore of Volvo is that they are durable, easy to work on, safety conscious vehicles.
Disclaimer: I am not a good car man. I like particular cars like the Lancia Stratos, Meyer's Manx, VW Beetle, Northrop-Gruuman Postal Service cars, and Subaru Forester.
I don't know much about vehicles besides theory and some cars, but I'd say that your engine bay and engine have another option besides restoration. You could get a newer engine for the size of bay that you have. I'd agree with an engine swap on the basis that, on average, traffic is a nightmare nowadays. The speed limits have increased with the general culture.... so there you go.
Newer engine for a new day and age.
Here are two resources that look proper to me:

and a fairly similar rebuild https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/h.....T/2936031.html

Stockish
IPD sway bars front and rear.
IPD lowering kit front and rear.
Reinforced front suspension.
Volvo B20F engine, minus the fuel injection and converted to dual SU side-draft carbs.
M41 4 speed with overdrive.
Volvo Virgo turbo wheels.
Volvo 242 seats.
Tiny aftermarket steering wheel that does NOT pair well with manual steering and wider than stock tyres. (Gonna remove it)

Yah, I tried and tried to get the 1996 Pathfinder to pass SMOG and ultimately failed (O2 and Catalyst OBD2 monitors refused to set, even though tailpipe passed!!!!! O2, Cat and EGR, two of the three had to read to pass, only EGR would set). It went off to the donation world where I hope someone in an area that doesn't need SMOG cert can run it for years to come. It had more time to go before retirement.
The idea of the vintage car came from a cow-orker, thus never having to get it smogged again.
It's been a slog so far, with a Roadkill style cardboard list that slowly is getting dealt with.
Feb 2nd-3rd I spent the greater part of the weekend dealing with a bevvy of ersatz repairs over its storied life.
In the late 1980's 'supposedly' it was road rallied. It is my understanding this is a factory rally model, though since it was brought back to life in 2012 one owner sold off its rally instruments cluster and installed a standard cluster. I have found little proof of this past life other than the factory long tube header, the pictures of the dash and the freaking huge notch cut out of the dash for the Rally Checkpoint Clock.
In the years prior and since it's lonely tree nap 1998-2012 there's been a few modifications, some good, many of them not good :D

Every car worth owning has a fun knuckle buster of a story :)
Road kill is awesome fun. Finnegan has his own Youtube channel too, and it's fun to watch if you aren't already: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1.....gGiuHFLJqHbG_g
Got a SWAG on when the beast will be drivable once again? May have to wander up there in the blue car for a visit!

Oh, I'd drivable now, actually my daily driver. It's just a bit rough almost everywhere. :D
I've seen Finnegan's channel, used to subscribe even but there were too many 'Kibbe and Finnegan' of them just talking so I only occasionally tune in there currently.
The main ones I watch currently are;
Bad Obsession, UK guys stuffing a Celica Turbo Intercooled 4WD drivetrain into a 1981 Mini.
Keith Appleton, UK stationary steam engine model repair.
Keith Rucker, Machine shop stuff.
Mustie1, light engine repairs, and just about anything else.
Urchfab, UK fitting a 59' Ford 100E body to a Miata chassis.
Really Random Channel, refurb of just about anything that can be painted.
Nick’s Garage, Canada muscle cars.
