A Lakota woman finds herself caught up in the magic of an approaching storm, and begins taking on the attributes of an ancient beast that roamed the land far before the time of humanity...
Another commission of mine drawn by the wonderful
TigerTwins. The basis here is an oft-cited etymology for the taxon Brontotheriidae (an ancient relative of horses that vaguely resembled modern rhinoceroses), claiming that it refers to the "thunder horse", a storm spirit in Sioux mythology based on the tendency of brontothere fossils to be unearthed during heavy rains. Now, while I can indeed find that etymology listed in scientific writing, I haven't been able to find any precedent for the concept in my brief research on actual mythology of Sioux cultures. As such, I'm suspicious of its veracity. Still, I thought it was an interesting opportunity to mix traditional world cultures and prehistoric anthropomorphism. That said, I am not especially knowledgeable about the Lakota, and so was somewhat wary of commissioning this piece. For that reason, I will gladly take the blame for any egregious errors with the premise.
