Honestly kill-ustrator seems really scary at first.
i was terrified of it for a WHILE, buuut then i got a job doing graphic design and had to deal with it eight hours a day every day. when i wasnt putting words on pictures, i'd "doodle" in vector because its kindof hard to hide a sketchbook on your desk when your boss comes around to check up on you.
so yeah, needless to say, that helped alot.
but really once you learn how to use the tools, its really pretty simple. no matter how time consuming.
a good way to start is to open up a jpeg of a sketch and just trace the lines with the pen tool. then you could color it in photoshop or play with colors in illustrator.
