Yep. The police weren't my friends either. Also good to know.
I quickly lined up the crosshairs with who I presumed to be the pilot of the VTOL and fired the laser rifle. The cockpit of the VTOL briefly erupted in a flash of violet, before suddenly lurching and diving straight into the ground, erupting into a fireball. Flashes of blue and red caught my eye from behind our stolen armored car, and I lowered myself back inside.
"More are coming from behind!" I shouted to JD.
"I know, I know!" he shouted. "Can you get them off our arse? Command is being a bunch of bludgers right now!"
"A-are we close to the canals?" I hear Molly ask. "Any beacon they implanted into Guardian would um, have to be low-powered. It won't be able to broadcast through the tunnels in the undercity."
"That'll work! Can you two do something to get the pigs to back off?" JD asked as I moved towards the rear of the car. I could barely hear the sound of the police sirens from the outside.
"I still have access to the car's systems. I'll um, see if I can't tune it on the fly." I heard Molly say as I opened one of the rear doors to the armored car.
When people suffer from retrograde amnesia, it's said that the oldest memories are the ones that tend to be the most likely to remain. Maybe that explained why I was expecting the police chasing us to be using civilian vehicles slightly modified for police use; spotlight, light bar, new paint, that kind of thing.
Well, they weren't driving civilian cars. No, these were military vehicles pressed into the role of police vehicles; rugged, upgraded with proper armor and a roof-mounted MG, painted black with a blue line and police markings, and the model the police were using had a civilian version that was well-known to be a rich person's toy. I had just enough time to recognize that my wings wouldn't stop their guns, and quickly closed the rear door just before they opened fire.
"Just why the hell are police armed with fifty caliber weapons?!" I shouted once they stopped firing.
"They're bloody fucking fascists, that's why!" JD shouted.
Eyup, decided to be a bit fancy and actually prove that I'm working on my next project. And that means, commissioning scenes from the project as I complete them!
So, here's something from Part 1 of Identity Crisis. As you can probably tell, our heroes are in the middle of a good ol' vehicle chase/shootout. Molly is the white mouse with the laptop, JD's the canine, and Robert's... somewhere in the back, off-panel. If you come back sometime later, this page will actually link to the part of the story it's from!
