In the not-so distant future a bleat echoing though a birthing chamber signals the start of a new life. But what is it's future?

I did indeed, Kantuck. Science fiction stories and TV shows are becoming, more than less, reality. I can only hope that we can be far more understanding and enlightened enough to, when we're scientifically ready to proceed with such an amazing endeavor, proceed with all due respect and caution.
Very true. It scares, and saddens me that uplift may actually happen. That's what my stories show the danger, and also what others will do with them. I don't trust corporations, and people with power, with such power over life. We've got 'sex robots' that may, in about 10 or 20 years be so realistic they can be true lovers. Uplift probably by the 2080s. It's a terrifying world coming up and we're still acting like we're in the 18th century.
I hear you, Kantuck. Futuristic technology scares the living daylights out of most rational people, including myself. I'm equally as distrusting of corporate anything. I'd be inclined to edge the timeline of slaves further back than the 18th century. A story that myself and a few other friends collaborated on dealt with the slavery and servitude issues. I'll note it to you one of these days, if that's okay with you.
That's very true. I have no problems with corporations making space travel affordable. Hell, if it wasn't for them, we'd still be stuck on the ground. Goverment isn't doing much and we need to get humanity off this planet.
But yeah, futher back. it's sickening.
I'd love ot see the story, send it anytime.

Carefully agreed, Kantuck, on both fronts. Yes, also agreed.
True.
It's sent. The character, Samuel aka Sammy, is a kind and gentle soul. I wanted him to know what no other black human being from our south hardly knew about. Jenna, Richard, and their children love Sammy like he is one of their own family.

That is the thing about this story. I didn't plan on this, just the first line came to mind while out with the dog, and it sort of .... well evolved this way. I wanted a sinister aspect too it as well, and I couldn't do that, without making the story feeling forced.
But it's comments like yours and others that are showing me something. I'm starting to write works that match the SF of old. Cautionary tales.
Also the general idea too. AI is one thing, but organics, as you said which will grow up, form attachments, and which will show itself to be possessed of that mysterious thing that we call a soul. That's what surprised me with this. Can an organic, non-human actually love? Or can a human actually care enough about a non-human? I know that animals can form attachments, show friendship to ones who treat them right. So....Ug, I need more tea, it's too late in the day to think :).
It's however triggered a major concept in my mind, I'll post it on a journal as I'd really like people's input on this.

I am glad I posted this, as well as the question. I'm getting a /lot/ of good answers to that question and makes it easier to write this area. I've had a story in mind for a VERY long time and for the life of me, I can't get it to write. It's a story about how Red Riding Hood, now grown up, meets the /daughter of the Big Bad wolf/.
The big mean looking she-wolf, we find, is a shy unsure type after you get past the snarling and growls. And who finds that out, but Red herself. But past that, I can't get the relationship written. I know Red will find Adawolfla (The wolf) attractive, and desirable but it's just not working. Maybe now I can get some traction on it.

Thank you! It will be challenging and I agree. I've read 3 versions of it before, and Grimm's epilog like version (https://www.grimmstories.com/en/gri.....little_red_cap) at the end, is more of the backstory I'm using. Because the one where the wolf's belly had both grandma, and Red in it is far too into fantasy (giggles). But the other could easly be done with uplift.
But what do do...(sighs) I haven't worked it out yet. We'll see.

Can you think of any examples of the timid and less timid interacting. Or lacking that potentially just set down with a friend in person and do some roleplaying to stimulate the flow. Or madlibbing perhaps. Altho I may be shooting in utterly the wrong direction. I am not a wordsmith. Nor am i familiar with your internal creative processes.
