Hm, that's actually pretty plausible. Tattoos were used heavily in most ancient religions as part of their rituals; they were believed to unlock mystical powers and bring them closer to the spirit realm.
Thankfully they didn't have THIS sort of power, though... Talk about a perversion of nature (even though it would be awesome at the same time).
