I watched as Reeva gently removed the strings from a marionettes limbs and detached the crossbar, carefully setting the polished wood piece down onto the floor. Then she ran her adorably tiny hands over the plush fabric that constituted its body, caressing the creature whose image I had been made in before stretching out her short arms and holding it up to me. Cocking my head to the left, I reached down and gingerly took the proffered toy, running the pad of my thumb across the fissures that marred the ivory mask that had been crafted for its face.
Seeing the doll up close continued to be a surreal experience, one I was certain I would never become used to.
“You should have him,” she said.
Blinking slowly, I glanced up from it to look directly into my--no, the humans--child's eyes. Not only had I never been given a gift prior to this moment, I was keenly aware of how important this figure was to her. From the fractured mask to the stitched-up tears and discolored spots that simply refused to be removed, it had been at her side from the beginning of her life up until this very instant.
“Thank you,” I began, turning it over in my hand, “but do you know what would be even better?”
Vibrant green eyes lit with curiosity. I leaned in close and she mirrored the movement, successfully conveying the image of two people conspiring.
“If you held on to him for me.”
Before she could utter a word I quickly lifted my free hand, silently requesting she wait. “Do you know why?”
“Um... No?”
“Because whenever you and I are apart, he will be there to remind you of me and comfort you when you need it most.” I paused for a moment and held out my hand, pinky extended. “Promise.”
The initial confusion that blanketed her face washed away instantly and she took the doll back, unleashing a massive grin that consisted more of gums than teeth. Then with a sudden cackle, she seized upon my pinky with both hands and forcefully shook it. Or, at the very least, with as much fervor as she was capable.
“Okay!” she bubbled. “I am holding you to that!”
Laughing heartily, I stooped low and scooped her up into my arms, planting a gentle kiss atop her head.
“I never break my promises.”
Guh, I do not even know what to say about this aside from the fact that Wabbamadness captured the essence of Eden beautifully. Although the one eye shown is a waning crescent, leaning towards saddened, I like to imagine that their other eye is a full moon swinging their mood to bemused. That said I am positively in love with this and I cannot wait to show off a full body of this marionette android!
