Frankenrodent. xD
The lady at the vet's office fell in love with him. x3 She was holding him all day yesterday, she says. x3 I asked if he licked her, he is quite a licker, and she said he did. xD
He's in his own cage now, until I sort things out. I'll take the cage apart later, piece by piece and try to figure out wtf happened @_@
Total cost: $250. Not as bad as I was dreading, but still half a paycheck. xD
As you can see I drew my picture backwards. Oooooops. x3

I think I may have an idea. There IS a pretty sharp edge to the plastic guard that runs along the cage's door. As to how the hell it cut his neck, I have yet to understand, but it makes a lot of sense. The corner could have cut him, and then as he tried to get away from it, he may have sliced himself open on it.
Luckily the plastic guard should be easy to remove. x3

Holy hell, I didn't think it was that big! Ouch ;-;
But lucky him he has you for a owner, someone who would spend that much on him to fix him up. My dad only paid the vet bills for my rats cuz I threatened to cry like a girl if he didn't X3
One of my rats, Zeke, (the one to live 5 1/2 years) had this huge patch of dry skin forming on her back that one day came off and left a huge thing of raw skin on her back that I had to separate her from the other because of it. And when it finally healed, she had a bald patch on her back for the rest of her life the size of a dime X3
I wonder if Ben here will have a bald line across his neck when he heals...?

xD I ordered the cage from www.martinscages.com, I think it is a pretty good cage, but I am going to take it apart later and see if I can find a sharp edge!
Poor ratty. I've heard of wounds like that from fighting, but they are rare. It reminds me of this: http://www.ratbehavior.org/images/CricketBite.jpg So I guess suppose it is possible that it's a bite... good idea to sand that corner too though.
Your vet did a great job on the stitches, very neat. I've seen some ugly jobs done to rats by big clumsy hands. There isn't even any redness or anything. The cool part about rats is that they have very few pain receptors in their skin and they heal really fast. He should be good as new quite soon. :)
Best of luck to him, and you for figuring out what happened.
