As far as I know, those are "Combat Identification Panels" - attachments designed to mitigate the risk of friendly fire. They show up distinctively when viewed through IR sights.

I spent some time as a gunner on a Leopard AS1, coz I'm old!

Oddly enough, a U.S. Tank company in Iraq wrote to me to ask it it was OK for them to use 'Tank Vixens" characters as art on some of their vehicles -which was fine by me. I'm a turret-head from way back. If they actually went ahead and did it, I never did get any photos!
