This was a 5e character I played in an underdark campaign. He was a half elf from the surface that ended up falling into the underdark at some point and being bitten by a wererat. He didn't think very highly of his old life, so he decided to start over, making a living as a burglar for hire in a large drow city. At some point he made a dark pact with a sentient sword from between realms.
His career went pretty well for a while until he got hired to burgle the house of a particularly important family. He was caught red handed, but because he had been a useful tool for them many a time before, they simply sold him to slavers instead of putting him to death on the spot. If he was as good as he claimed to be, he would be back and better than ever.
With some help from the other prisoners, he managed to escape, but sadly he died to a darkmantle attack when the party bard refused to heal him unless paid.
