When Anizhar was a young man, still wearing his tiefling disguise, he had 2 insatiable urges - one for power, and the other for the flesh of intelligent creatures. Satiating the first would make it easier to satisfy the second. To that end, he joined with the Church of Desna, manipulating and conniving his way up the heirarchical ladder until he was able to reach missionary status.
He was assigned to a small village that was having trouble with wild animal attacks, like a wolf to a pen of sheep. He used the excuse of wild animal attacks to drag off and devour a villager every so often, enough to keep his cravings in check, until one night a disappearance that he hadn't caused happened.
Whether due to a tiny spark of empathy, or maintaining his cover, he went to investigate and found a dire bear mauling a young villager's corpse. He faught it, and only just barely won, leaving him weak and injured. In a moment of weakness and desparation, he began to eat the remains of the corpse out in the open. A shadow came over him from behind, and he feared his career, and perhaps his life, was over in that instant.
The shadow belonged to Tedarani Landstrider, an experienced cleric of desna. Instead of bashing his head in with her walking staff, she instead took pity on him. He looked so desparate and ashamed that this must be a compulsion rather than a desire. This was only half true, but she saw it how she wanted. She didn't tell the villagers of what she witnessed, and they celebrated Anizhar as a hero.
