I don't think the lack of background so much kills the picture as brings the focus to the character. You have some amazing texture in this on the scales and the horns in particular, and it makes those, uh... wing...streamers look exceptionally smooth.
That looks like a really challenging viewpoint for the face, too. I'm envious!

The face wasn't so bad actually, it was the hands that gave me the most trouble D:
