Story:
SISTERS IN PART
When Yuuki first became ill she didn’t think much of it. A little cough and some aches. Not much different then a common cold. It was when it lasted for a couple of weeks that her younger sister Monika, who had been studying to become a biochemist scientist, insisted that she see a doctor. Yuuki and Monika had been living together ever since their parents died years before in the war. Yuuki considered seeing a doctor but with what little money they had she didn’t want to loss it over what could possibly be nothing.
Yuuki put it off for another couple of days but as her paws began to hurt as she walked she couldn’t hold off any longer. Little patches of fur were falling off. Yuuki and Monika went to the hospital and the place was packed. The patients were called in one by one. Every minute was an agonizing moment Yuuki wished would end. Several hours passed before Yuuki was called in to see the doctor.
While the doctor was examining Yuuki he tested her reflexes by tapping her knee. The little rubber hammer hit her and Yuuki cried in pain. The fur where the doctor tapped her fell off and she was bleeding. The doctor took blood samples and informed them that once he knew something, anything, he would inform them. He insisted that they stay in his building until that time came. A room was set up for them and they stayed.
Two days passed and Yuuki’s fur was nearly half gone and by this time she started coughing up blood. She had been given medicine to dull the pain, but they couldn’t get rid of all the pain entirely and they didn’t stop the coughing.
At the end of the second day the doctor returned to give some grave news. Whatever was happening to Yuuki was something that he had never seen or heard of before but what he could decipher from her blood test was that it wouldn’t distribute oxygen to her body properly and because of that parts of her body were dying.
This is when Yuuki’s younger sister Monika vowed to solve whatever was wrong with her. Monika knew there were advances being made in medicine and technology since the war. Yuuki was no longer to go to work so Monika had to pull another job to pay for Yuuki’s stay while staying on with her studies.
As the months progressed Yuuki’s condition only got worse. At this point Yuuki had become attached to a machine to stay alive. Monika had come up with the concept to have a machine circulate her blood through a system to induce more oxygen to Yuuki’s blood, but she had to find someone else to build the contraption. Although the machine helped in part Yuuki’s body was still unable to distribute the oxygen properly.
Monika sought out to build a suit that could do the same as the machine but distribute the oxygen for Yuuki. It took Monika a full year to design the suit, that would be connected directly to Yuuki’s nervous system for her to control, but Monika needed to find someone to construct it. Another setback was the raw material she needed to construct the suit for the flexible metal was toxic before settling.
Monika sought the help of Ezmer Braxxsmith, a talented blacksmith, and his wife Aemawl, a skilled engineer. While working on a prototype Aemawl became ill and died due to the toxic metal. Ezmer forced Monika to leave after learned the cause of his wife’s death. Monika never told Ezmer why she needed this made but at this point an arm had been constructed and that was enough for Monika to work with. She was able to study the effect from Aemawl before she passed to determine how to finish it and in a safer manor than how it was handled prior. It took Monika, with her little knowledge in engineering, another six determined months to make the suit. It was a grueling task, but Monika was able to combine the suit with Yuuki. It was a success, but Monika refused to stop there and added two more arms to her dear sister just as an experiment to see if additional robotic limbs would work on an organic being and they did!
Monika made a promise to return to Ezmer one day to show him that his wife’s death was not in vain. Until that time she needed to monitor Yuuki’s progress and make sure that nothing would go wrong as the suit needed to be charged to stay functionable, she feared what would happen if it ever ran out of power.
This is an important piece to me. I live with chronic pain and Monika has become the one that would make me better. I created the story of her sister Yuuki to show that Monika would got to great lengths to help those she loved. I know it won't happen, but just to imagine that there is someone that could do the same for me helps mentally.
So a big thank you to smallcoffemaniac for this commission <3
