After a good 25 or so hours of soldering, wire bending and more then a few submissions to the swear jar, all the wire supports are finished and some 2mm thick, marine grade stainless steel flex cable strung through. (The cable is called 7/19, 7 cables strung together, each one having 19 strands, this is very light and very flexible cable, minimum bend radius is around 14mm)
It took about 10 meters of cable to string through and have enough extra for the second half of this project which hasn't been started yet, which is the frame which will hold it to my back. The frame will be made of 4mm thick 316 stainless steel rod, bent, shaped and tig welded together to form fit against my lower back, which will include viscous dampers, pulleys and elastic returns to give the tail 'realistic movement' without the need for any batteries, motors, pneumatics or other such fiddily devices.
The tail is 1.7 meters long, and only weighs about .5kg's (that's about 1.1lbs for you yanks :}) So is ridiculously light, but after some initial tests, might be too long and I suspect I'll have to cut it down slightly, not to mention you'll see the taper is completely uniform from top to bottom, which I might revise.

Haha, 'Dragon' 'Winging-it' I get it ;}
This was a design I improved upon by someone I once knew by the name of 'wolftail'
See, http://www.wolftronix.com/animatronics.htm for more information.

thanks, and i tend to use that a lot, 'sona being part dragon aside. i guess it just stuck. the funny thing is that i actually thought of that later, and couldn't even remember if that is what i said. his design is nice, but seems more geared for someone who wants to make a tail that more or less hangs down, whereas your style is seemingly built for a dragon, which is the type of tail i would need to make. raw materials alone, not counting the tools, how much would it cost to buy the supplies for your design?
First, I don't have any blueprints, this is simply out of my imagination so far as the way it's being built/modified to accommodate the more saurian/lizard like proportions I'm going for.
Raw materials... I would say no more then $100 for everything needed to make what I have in mind. However, where the real costs come into play is the decade + of experience in welding, machining, sourcing and inventing. then there's the thousands and thousands needed for milling machines, welders, lathes, ect. Not to mention, the ability to know, before you invest too much time into a design, that it's either going to work, or not, and redesign accordingly. These things I cannot append an accurate price to.
