"But Ciiiiaraaaa, I can't go out like this!" Emer examined the new dress with distaste, then shot her mother a stern glare. "What are people going to think?"
Ciara gave her a motherly smile and fixed the bow in her hair with no regard for good taste. "They'll think you're a very pretty young lady, just like I do. Not stop squirming. It's only for one day, it won't kill you to wear it for a day, will it?"
Emer tugged at the thin material in a vain attempt to get it to fit more comfortably. It might have looked quite pretty on someone else, but on her it looked like a rumpled sack. "Can't I wear a uniform instead? Deirdre gets to. She says a soldier has always got to look the part."
Ciara brushed some invisible lint from Emer's shoulder and sat back to look at her. "Your grandmother says a lot of things, pup. You're not a soldier, not yet anyway. You're a princess of Cearnach, and my beautiful daughter, and that's what I want everyone to see at the gala tonight. Now, try to smile, at least a little? Please?"
Emer forced a smile long enough to get Ciara to finally leave. When she had first heard of the big gathering that night, she'd been quite excited. Ciara and Deirdre together conspired to keep her at home most of the time, so she only rarely got to meet anyone from outside Cearnach itself. Tonight, dignitaries from all of the Three Kingdoms would be gathered together and it promised to be quite the spectacle.
She tugged at the hated dress again and grumbled under her breath. She could hear everyone laughing at her already. Glancing toward her bedroom door, she cocked one ear, listening for any hint that her mother might be coming back. Slowly, hardly daring to breathe, she knelt down and felt under her bed for the dagger that grandmother Deirdre had given her for her eleventh birthday. Ciara might be able to make her wear a dress, but she would show the whole world she wasn't that kind of princess.
Gift from MeganBryar. I even stole her story that goes with it! *evil bunny laugh* But I WILL, lend Emer my best thigh sheath so she can wear the dagger her Grandmother gave her, and not feel totally defenseless in that dress. She's not used to being girly, and doesn't want to get used to it either!

Poor, poor Emer. You'd think Ciara would remember how much she hated wearing dresses when she was that age, too, wouldn't you? Still, you've got to admit she looks super cute in that dress, no matter whether she likes it or not, and black is a really good color on her, too.
I'm sure that sheath will come in really handy, too. Poor girl needs something to help boost her confidence.
*Hugs tight* Thanks so much for posting it, and I'm so glad you like it, and the little story I wrote for it, too!

The color is fine. It's the whole girly thing that just ain't Emer. But I suppose she'll live through one part wearing it.
I think her self confidence is fine, but slinging a dagger around her waist (or on her thigh) will definitely make her feel at least a little more like herself in that dress.

Oh, but she's just sooooooo cute! That's a sweet little dress she's wearing, and I agree with Megan. Black is a really good color on her. I think she looks pretty badass in that dress, even with the girly little bow. I really like how she looks with her hair down, too. She should come hang out with her auntie Grace. We'll have so much together, she'll forget all about her fashion woes!
Hey, just 'cause you're a tomboy doesn't mean you can't like dresses, too. Or maybe it's just me. But if you learn to switch it up and have fun both ways, it makes it that much harder for people to slap you with a stereotype.
Then again, Emer's lucky to live in a world where if she does grow up to fancy other girls, nobody's gonna bat an eye.

That's the fun thing about kids. There are so many possible ways for them to go, and you get to explore it all together. Whatever direction she goes, she's a beautiful young lady and she'll always have a fan in me.
And that's why I admire you and Megan so much. You love your kids no matter what, and see the good in everyone.

Not bad at all, in my opinion. Of course you know that Megan and I both love you to pieces too. I won't speak for Megan on this, though I have reason to believe she'd agree with me, but I'm quite a devotee of ultra-cute foxgirls who like being leashed and loved. Like you for instance.....
Well, you're the adopted son of both Megan and Grace. That makes you family all right, though I'm not sure exactly where in the 'tree' you are either where Emer is concerned. But you're definitely one of the few people I'd trust to escort my daughter, and help her have a good time!
Come to think of it, Megan, Grace and I are so close we're nearly sisters. Maybe that makes you an honorary adopted son to me too? Would you accept being adopted again by a mean ol' vampire rabbit like me?

oh dear, just be glad Cassandra didn't see that... little miss bristlebritches that she is, may give you a lecture on being more ladylike and chewing your food, as well as the risks of choking or blocked airways.
She doesn't do it to be mean, instead out of worry. she frets over other's well-being.
