Take a mantis shrimp. Upscale. Lightly anthropomorphize. That's a Nyvoss for you.
Originating from the shallow waters of Chinnar III, a Class 5 oceanic planet (i.e. all ocean), these seven-foot-tall crustaceans are apex predators at heart. Their natural armor and weaponry - a pair of raptorial claws - gives themlike+3 or +4 to combat rolls unparalleled strength and resilience, although it's somewhat diminished in environments that aren't quite like their beloved waterworlds. Try as they might, Nyvoss diplomats can never quite get rid of that "giant alien death-bug" vibe.
Although most Nyvoss are friendly and polite if a bit hot-tempered, there's a statistically significant percentage of unscrupulous Machiavellian masterminds among the population. This may, or may not, have contributed to the rise of their current world government - the Cerulean Court, an aristocratic trade league reminiscent of Earth's maritime republics. In the 23rd century, Nyvoss merchant galleys can be found far, far beyond the Court's modest interstellar holdings, peddling goods from all corners of the galaxy.
