Even when all seems quiet and still, there are those who still need to move.
Upon first looking from Abercregan down the valley towards the snow-covered coal tips, I noticed something atop one of the trees in the foreground. First thinking it might have been a nest, zooming in with my camera revealed it to be a large buzzard, occasionally swivelled its head to take in the surrounding area. Thinking on it, I suppose small mammals would show up very well against the white covering the ground, making the raptor’s job much easier despite the cold. I did manage to get some close-ups of the bird, if anyone would like to see them, but it was at a distance where the 5-year old camera began to expel quality for zoom.
For some reason, this encounter reminded me of one of my favourite Welsh-language poems, called ‘Y Llwynog” (“The Fox”). It’s a charming short take of a group of friends walking up to a mountain top on a Sunday morning, and a fox strays into their path, halting for a fleeting moment before casually returning to its business. If you speak Welsh, or have a good translator, I can recommend a read.
Hope you enjoy!
