There were many games to be had at the Jazzcat Nightclub, all of which were cat related. On Valentine's Day, they were holding a special version of Musical Chairs but with a valentine's-feline twist. It was there that Heather hoped to find her true love amongst her fellow cat lovers, at long last.
The game was being set in a separate room from the dance floor, remodelled to look exactly like a refurbished living room at home. It featured all the luxuries any cat would enjoy amongst the furniture for human owners...though considering what happened to most humans at the club, it was largely décor.
There were 12 people—six boys and six girls—all standing in a circle around two rows of boxes, totaling to about ten. Each of them had signed on to participate in the game after paying a registration fee and signing a waiver. A pair of staff gave out red and pink pet collars, their names engraved on heart shaped tags. The collars were scented with catnip.
Heather received a pink collar like the other girls, fitting it around her neck. She looked around at the hanging valentine decorations on the ceiling and thought all about how long she'd waited to have a chance at finding the right one for her. Nobody ever shared the love for cats that she did and no man was ever good enough for her. The only one she could have ever married was one of her many toms at home. Her parents would joke about that, but now the joke was them. They would soon find that they had a beautiful queen for a daughter.
They were then asked to each talk a bit about themselves, going counter-clockwise. When it was Heather's turn, she brought up how she was a small-town girl who lived all alone at her house. Like everyone else here, she signed up to find the right one.
The girls were the first to talk. It was the men's turn after. Carlton tugged at his red collar nervously when as they moved down the line. He wasn't sure what kind of impression he was going to make here at an event like this. All the girls were staring at him, especially the one who named herself Heather. Then it was his turn and he probably flubbed it already.
Carlton was a city boy born and raised in Manhattan. He moved out here to get away from the hustle and bustle but found himself very lonely. Like everyone there, he was also a fond lover of cats, but not in the way many would suspect. He actually was a cosplayer who engaged in dressing like a cat quite frequently. This brought a lot of laughter around the room which left him flushed. He wasn't sure why it was a big deal. Everyone who was here likely knew all about the magic behind this place—nobody was going to walk out of here as they did when they first arrived.
After all introductions were done, the staff then introduced themselves to the players of the game. Both of them were married happily and were in the business of dating and arranging marriages. They were a man and woman, wearing the standard uniform but with valentine's tones. Each of them donned cat ears and a tail with a prosthetic cat muzzle around their faces. Like everyone else, they were wearing a red and pink collar.
“So here's how the game works,” The husband said. “You're all going to run around in circles around the two rows of boxes, one for the boys and one for the girls. All the while, music's going to play. When it stops, the boys and girls need to get in boxes. Whoever isn't in one is out and a box is removed. Whoever those two are will be your romantic partners for the night.”
“The winners of the game, however, get a special treat from the two of us!” The wife said. “Now, we're going to start the music. Hope you're all ready, little kitties!”
They didn't have long before they started hearing the music playing away. It was the sound of a romantic saxophone playing at a slow-paced jazzbeat, accompanied by piano music and the soft pitter-patters of a drum. One could almost hear the sound of mewling somewhere in the back.
Heather's whole body was tense. She found herself darting to the boxes before the music stopped. Only when the Staff scowled at her for trying to jump ahead did she refrain from putting herself in that box. On the third time she sprinted ahead, however, the music did come to a stop and she was the first person to get herself comfortably in a box, leaving one of the ladies to have to take whatever man was available.
It wasn't Carlton—luckily for him. His new feline slits were watching the other guys carefully, anticipating their movement. From the slightest twitch of their sharpening ears to the sudden jerk behind their pants, his legs were coiled and ready to pounce at the next box.
Heather was once again quick to get into the box, carefully now to apply too much pressure to her growing tail. She felt like she was a lot smaller now as she was able to fit inside the boxes with relative ease this other time. She made a quiet purr to herself as the second girl strolled off with her date.
Once more, Carlton was proving to be quite fast for the other Toms. It was much easier for him to get there after he'd taken off his shoes. Having a better feel for the wooden floor underneath his dainty footpaws let him prepare himself to strike when necessary while not giving it away.
They were all rapidly shrinking in size, their clothes beginning to trail behind them as the staff carefully picked them up. Heather mewed in annoyance as she felt her pants get pulled off her hind paws. She was trying to play the game with the other queens and when the humans stopped her like that, it slowed her down. Threw her off her game, even!
Carlton had given up walking on his hind legs by this point. He was getting too slow and clumsy to keep going. There were still two other toms both competing for those boxes but they were still trying to stand on their hind legs, mewling in confusion as to why they were bothering. Clutching to that silly humanity was how they'd lose!
Now there were only two queens—heather and a calico who had paused briefly to clean herself. It was a bad time for her to do so as the music suddenly stopped, leaving Heather the opportunity to be the fastest kitty of them both and jump inside that last box! She won! The female human picked her up and raised her up to show off the other cats. Heather was so happy, she didn't care how awkwardly the human was holding her.
As she put her back down, she padded over to the winning Tom—a large black shorthair with the name “Carlton” on it. She rubbed her forehead against his head, exchanging scents when the humans knelt down and gave them their prize—pretty silver bells that jingled a pleasant tune when they walked. Finding true love, a shiny trinket, and then purina cat chow after...this was the perfect Valentine's Day for any cat!
