First things first, let me say that I'd supported this ship for a long, long time but never got around to doing anything with it other than bringing it up with a few folks way back when. So yay :D
Secondly, let me also say that this is set in my own little fanfiction setting, which WILL defy what the current canon goes off of. Don't like that? Well it's fan-fiction so there. Still don't like it? Hit that Back Button and forget you ever saw anything.
Also bear in mind I'm disregarding almost everything that's happened since Activision bought out Blizzard, so will be sticking to what I was up to when I still played. Expect things to be different and stuff (Like some of the Northrend Conflict still happened, but Malygos wasn't really the one causing it. Other than DW dying and Awbee and Snarlflare growing up, nothing post-WotlK ever happened.). Don't like that either? Fite me. I'm not changing it.
So here's the last of my Valentines Day pics, and this time I have a little story to go with it! :D Here we goooo:
Alexstrasza made her way through a cave in the far reaches of Winterspring, a cave that had in the past been filled with horrible monsters. Over the years they had been culled by various adventurers and heroes, only to be inhabited again by creatures of all sorts who tried to claim them for themselves. In recent times, they had been taken over by the Blue Dragons. It seemed as if some modifications were made to it since then, to better accommodate their size. Fortunate, since this meant she could remain in her natural form while traveling through it - even if she did come very close to taking up most of the passage.
By her side walked a black drake, one of Onyxia's. She had been broken free of the curse on her race by Heartwing and his friends, and the drakes most loyal to her soon followed. He was clearly displeased at having been tasked with bringing Alex here however. The sheer cold did not agree with him, and being in such close proximity to a member of a race they had been at war with for so long was... Unnerving at the very least, even if the two here weren't enemies anymore.
He had been the one to lead her to the cave where the others had hidden Malgyos after the assassination attempt on him, but why hadn't anyone told her about this? She hadn't been filled in on the plan or even his survival.
Like many else, Alex had been led to believe Malygos had perished in the attack. She had to admit, she was just a bit annoyed that Onyxia knew about this but not a close friend of his. Then again, deception and espionage were Onyxia's area of expertise – chances were good she was the one who came up with the plan to sneak Malygos out of his lair before the attack to begin with, or at the very least found out about it on her own. You couldn't keep much hidden from her after all.
“C-can I go now?” the black drake stuttered while shivering, immediately after they had reached the end of the tunnel.
Alex nodded her head, “Yes, go right ahead...”
She had barely finished half of the sentence before the drake had turned to dart out of the frigid cave.
After he had left, Alex entered the chamber proper.
Malygos was lying in the center of the chamber, fiddling with something in his claws. It looked like a puzzle of sorts, and he was in the middle of solving it. Malygos looked up as she entered, grinning widely when he saw he had company.
“Alex!” He exclaimed excitedly, “I wasn't expecting to see you come visit me!”
Alex smiled weakly. She was glad to see that Malygos was not only still alive, but still his usual self. He was always the most carefree of the Aspects, to the point he was sometimes described as a whelp that grew up in body if not mind. She was also glad that the nightmares she had been having... That Malygos was indeed not one of those that had come to harm.
“Malygos... You're alive. I can't believe it.” she muttered, trying to swallow the worry in her voice.
Alex sat herself down nearby. “Back in Northrend. We found your body. I thought you were dead Malygos.”
Malygos tilted his head to the side quizzically. “If you thought I was dead, how did you find me here?”
“Kalecgos filled me in before I left the continent and had one of Onyxia's drakes show me where you were hiding,” she replied, “But what happened, how did you escape Northrend?”
Malygos looked up at the frozen ceiling, thinking back. “Well... I don't know all the details but two of my elite drakes had come to me with urgent news... I figured it had something to do with the unrest brewing among the blue dragons there, but they didn't say what it was about. Just that I had to leave and quickly.”
He returned his attention to Alex. “And then they sneaked me out here to the middle of nowhere.”
Not knowing all the details huh, Alex thought to herself. Even Malygos was in the dark about this.
“Who took your place?” Alex asked.
“Excuse me?”
“The corpse. Someone had to have taken the fall in your stead. Who was it?”
The blue dragon's smile faded, and his head lowered.
“Right... One of my dragons stayed behind to take my place. It was a shapeshifting spell, similar to the one the mortal heroes used to infiltrate the Black Dragon's operations some years back.”
Malygos shook his head. “Cyagos knew he would die, but he stayed anyway.”
“I'm sorry, Malygos. I'm glad you're alright though, that you're safe”
Malygos's grin returned and he began to chatter excitedly “I'm glad too, especially since I was so lonely this whole time! Almost nobody came to see me and whenever someone did drop by it was never for long and I was bored and had no idea what was going on and didn't--”
Alex put a claw up to Malygos's mouth, interrupting him.
“Remember that date you asked me on years ago? I think I'll take you up on that.” she said casually.
If dragons could blush, Malygos's face would have been as red as Alex's scales.
“How about Feralis this evening? The ruins of Dire Maul are secluded, and almost nobody ever goes there anymore.”
“Sure...” Malygos said absentmindedly, taken aback by the sudden proposal.
Malygos had tried flirting with Alex before in the past, but she always ignored him. Of course she would, she was married at the time. To be fair, he was married as well – but he wasn't honestly expecting anything to come from it anyway. He was just being... Himself. Now though they were both single, and he similarly hadn't expected her to remember his flirting back then, let alone having any feelings for him now.
Alex turned to leave while Malygos was lost in his thoughts, and at the chamber's mouth she turned to look back at him.
“Don't forget to change your humanoid form to something else,” she called back to him, “Remember you're supposed to be in hiding”
Malygos nodded his head slowly, “Yeah.... Alright” he said in a daze, his thoughts still solidly on what Alex had just said.
He wasn't sure how all this would go, if it'd work out at all or not. He always did have a bit of a fondness for Alexstrasza, but now that she was actually returning that affection he wasn't sure what to do or what to think about it. After remaining silent for a few minutes and thinking over what just happened, he returned to the puzzle he was working on. Tonight was going to be interesting, one way or the other. Hopefully it'd work out for the both of them, and somewhere out there he figured there was someone who was hoping to see this happen. A thought that amused him somehow.
Well, now it was happening. Time would tell where this would take the two dragons, and maybe... Just maybe, they'd find happiness together.
Secondly, let me also say that this is set in my own little fanfiction setting, which WILL defy what the current canon goes off of. Don't like that? Well it's fan-fiction so there. Still don't like it? Hit that Back Button and forget you ever saw anything.

Yeah I don't see that happening while Activision's in charge, and I hear Blizzard's been going through a lot of lay-offs recently. That's a sign of a sinking ship, so I don't think Warcraft will live long enough to see the damage Activision did to it be repaired. Acti's been making all sorts of things useless since they barged in, and I'd totally expect the original cast to be countable on one hand by the time they're done with the series.
Yeah, the series died for me when Activision took over. Malygos was the start of its decline, and it's just gotten worse and worse since then. That's why I don't consider anything Post-TBC to be "canon". Yeah, yeah. "Canon is canon, it happened and nothing will change that" but that wasn't Blizzard's work - that was Blizzivision's. The "Acti'clysm' had started, and now there's two timelines to be followed - we'll just never get to see where Blizzard's would have gone :/
Blizzivision's method of opperating was basically "Hey guys we're running out of villains, so we're just going to take what's left of the cast and turn them evil.Laziest easiest way is to just make them go mad somehow. Perfect way o fmaking content!" Without like, any regard to what that's doing to the story, the world, and the longevity. The hell do they think they're going to do for the series when all the main cast has been reduced to just Thrall? Oh right, ti's not gonna get that far. The ship will have sunk by then and they'll shrug and move on to other things.
It was a long, slow, painful death the series had to suffer, but for those of us who knew what the crew were like prior to Activision barging in it's the most painful. A newcomer, or a person only focused on raiding/PvP'ing, or a person playing casually and not dipping any deeper than what they find in the game.... To them, Malygos and the rest are "just another raid boss". They weren't hoping to see a redemption arc for Arthas, or hoping he could stick around to provide more threats later. They don't know about Malygos being so carefree and fun just prior to all this. That when he was on a quest of dire importance, he was goofing off and trolling a fellow Aspect. That he had this adorable way of talking when he got flustered or excited. They'd never know that about him, since Activision never felt the need to keep that sort of stuff around. It wouldn't "do" to have an evil boss have a personality.
We would know though, and seeing the characters and series we used to love be twisted into something unrecognizable... I'll never be able to accept this as canon. Activision's canon is not what i'm willing to accept as that, and if fanfiction is the only other option, well then so be it. I'm sure we can do a better job than Activision anyway :B
With that being said, I don't think I really want to try my hand at a "serious" story anyway. I'd rather stick to Slice-of-Life stuff since it's more fun. I mean, I've got ideas? But... I don't think I could do this series "justice" if you know what i mean. Like.... I like making fun stuff. But when I get into doing actual fiction crafting I like having it bear as much resemblance to the source as possible. I like staying in-character as closely as I can. Which is why, as much as I hated what ahppened, there was still some 'conflict' here. It's just.... Malygos wasn't the instigator. And I couldn't bear to have him die either.
To be honest... It was going to be a part of a much deeper overarching story. One I still narrate to myself every now and then (It's how I write these. After a dozen or so passes I got something I like and can mostly remember, then I start writing.) but... I don't think it'll ever see the light of day. I'm not talented enough of a writer, and I don't want to "ruin" things like Activision did. Small stuff like this, and "for the funsies of it" things (a fav of mine, like the characters hanging out "off-stage" or playing other games) is fine, but I don't think I'd take a stab at an actual story, s'much as I kinda want to.
Aaah but I let myself ramble there, I'm sorry~ I just.... Warcraft held a precious place in my heart once upon a time, and I'll be honest here - I've never actually had to watch a series die like this before. I may have read up on one after the fact, or joined as it ended... But I was never "There from the start, then watched as it ended". I can't even look up my favortie characters anymore, since you'll just get "X character being ebil" instead of what they used to be known for... I was furious with what Monster Hunter World did. I really was. But it still has room to improve. Warcraft? It's on its way out. Whether it'll be mercifully quick or be dragged through the mud even longer, who can say. I'd hope Alex survives the storm at least, but by now what does it even matter? She and the others are still alive in Blizzard's canon, and they're alive in our hearts so long as we choose to remember them and cherish their memories. That's all... That really matters I suppose.
Like you said though, all good things come to an end - an we're quickly approaching that end with Warcraft :<

Hahaha don't worry, I understand I'm also very passionate of the warcraft universe and its lore, I mean WoW was a huge thing for me, the English I'm using right now? I learned it from playing WoW, I think I even went too far with my love for the game since it started to conflict with IRl stuff... but anyways.
I agree 100% with them making beloved characters just "another raid boss" it was annoying for sure, and tough for me the "activision BS line" lies after ICC, I agree Maly was handled very poorly and the boss fight was very "meh" too. I'm not a nobbel like 100% lore nerd but knowing the back story of the characters always made the things more interesting and the books and old games were usually enjoyable, but it also made me realize how bad they started to handle them.
The one character arc that pissed me off to infinity was Cairne's and as I said Thrall went from Awesome to green jebus.
I do wonder how much the cancer that is Activision really affected the story in the early expansions tough, Metzen and his crew were mostly there so some of the original creators were still working on the story.
On the other topic, I can see that you are very passionate about the Warcraft universe, so keep writing as much as you are comfortable IMO, you know how it is, when we like something we take extra care and effort and it will show.
And about MH, heh I have to admit ive only played MH:GEN so I don't know much about the whole franchise, in fact I sometimes re-learn the names from some of the monsters thanks to your works, one maw at a time xd hahaha.

Blizzard's been one of those "Super-Awesome" companies for so long, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt here and assume Activision started pushing around once they took over. Sure, they could have had Malygos get fought either way, and Arthas was probably a given. Then they have Maly just be fought to a draw or have Alex come in and stop the fighting before it gets too far, or this or that. Then Activision's like "Naw, we don't like that try this instead". Bungie wanted to make their own game that wasn't Halo. Once their contract with Microsoft ended they immediately went to Activision. Smooth move on their part. They were able to make their game sure, but even though their own writers were working on their own game, anything Activision wanted to mess around with, they got to mess around with - be it gameplay or story or whatever.
Since things began tanking hard just after Activision took over, I'd like to believe Blizzard's writers weren't entirely to blame. Who knows, maybe Maly would have gotten screwed over in either canon, but chances are good that he'd at least have been written better in 100% Blizzard's. With that being said though, I think I like my idea better - let's NOT just go around killing the main cast left and right hm? :P
Actually kinda part of why I liked the RTS games better, since you didn't need an escalating threat for things to still be interesting, and didn't need to just start offing characters so quickly. Threats could be provided by more than just the Monster of the Week trying to one-up its predecessor.
Eee, I guess. I got plenty of ideas - some more ont he fun side others more story'ish, but while they sound fun in my head I unno. I guess that's when you start sharing them with others to sort of build them up before first. Like in this little story here, it takes place after DW's already been defeated but also shortly after the unrest in Northrend (The former happened first). With him gone the 'curse' on the black dragons began to weaken, and so there was a split between the two - those that followed Onyxia and wanted to 'rebuild' their race and fit back into the world, and those that followed her brother (Resurrected?:P) that were prob still deep into that whole clouded mind/heart thing. Even after the curse had entirely faded, they were still opposed to making peace with the others. Probably not the smartest decision, but hey!
Ony's actually in the shaky position here, since (1) most of the world still is automatically inclined to attack black dragons on sight (Since the conversion only happened recently, the 'word' hasn't exactly spread yet), (2) Out of sheer bias on my part I passed the EW title and duties over to her (Helps that she's related to Nel?DW so...) making her a target for... something else I have planned, and (3) unlike her brother's flight, she doesn't have any mature dragons in her party. Any drakes she loses can't be replaced, and there's not exactly a lot of dragons from the other flights lining up to get together with her if you know what I mean. So Nefarion can replace his losses, Onyxia can't replace hers. Her "New" Black Dragonflight could very well die off as quickly as it was formed.
The deal there is that when Onyxia was broken free of it, she only had a bundle of whelps and Drakes to follow her since they were too young for the curse to fully take root and be unable to be broken out of it. Onyxia was the sole exception for adults since (one of my older fic'ies) the [Neltharion's Tear] artifact had been staving it off for years and years until Nefarion stole it from her (It was making her "weak"). Thus, she was still in a threshold where she could be broken out of it even though she was fully an adult, as it never was able to take full hold over her.
Maybe it's a leftover from when I decided to make these stories more 'fun' some years and years back, but I thought about making Nefarion a little more.... Fun :D The justification here is that they're able to show more emotion than 'just' anger and hatred, and .... Aaah I unno, I was going to share something but it's only on the tip of my tongue ><; I hope you can see what I'm getting at though! Showing more 'personality' and stuff, while still being a villain. ^^
Coincidentially, most of my stories end up focusing more on the dragons and stuff if non-original characters are gonna be involved haha xD
Hnnn and I went off on a tangent there sorry ;v;
Nn, well at least you're familiar with Lagiacrus and the Leviathans then :P
They were axed out of the latest game over a little rigging issue they didn't feel like fixing >_>

Hnnn and I went off on a tangent there sorry ;v;
Nn, well at least you're familiar with Lagiacrus and the Leviathans then :P
They were axed out of the latest game over a little rigging issue they didn't feel like fixing >_>
Sorry for the ultra late response, was traveling.
I think Maly was being set off to the chopping list in any of the two possible cannons but god they could've handled that in such a more interesting way, and yea Activision doing their company destroying things as always, sigh.
I also agree the RTS were better in some ways although I do love the MMO gimmick of your character experiencing the story elements, the cannon in overall was more interesting in the RTS games and didnt need to just destroy lore to make a new raid boss.
Oh I really like the idea of the black dragon flight coming back though I actually hate Onyxia with a passion, farming her for months with like 3 characters for that stupid mount lol "PTSD intesifies" but yea she is the one that probably would make the dragon flight come back. Is she going to also have some problems with the old gods like Nelth did?
I understand where you are going, it's not only "Pain, Agony, I'm angery so I destory Azeroth" man Cata was a hard letdown story wise Q.Q. but I'll keep an eye to see what you come up with!
And yea MH monsters have such cool designs I really like to look at the models or photos of them love how many of them look, can't wait to get better PC to play MH world even if hardcore fans seem to be disappointing by it I'm pretty sure I'll have a blast with thise big meanie beasts ;P
