It's to remind people that trans people are widely oppressed socially and politically, and that others should take note and be sympathetic to them to ensure they are treated as equal citizens, and to show personal support in their fight for getting or keeping the rights to very simple things, like licenses, passports, and even bathroom usage.

I like this explaination best.

well considering how backwards the USA is for example with LGBT rights an intense response isn't exactly unwarranted, its a rich and "free" country where minorities have less rights compared to many other "free" nations

Not so long ago, gays couldn't marry or have civil union, and shit was happening like doctors not letting couples see eachother on their deathbed because they weren't "legally recognized" as "family." Its good to take a stance on this stuff early.
