Spyro peered over the valley that rested before him, his eyes scanning buildings and structures that may be several hundred years old, if not thousands of years old. Behind him, Cynder gazed longingly, only having heard stories of this place.
"So this is Arcantheus, the ancient dragon capital," Cynder said lowly, her eyes refusing to part from the endless sea of buildings.
"Yes, it is." A reluctant, yet firm voice answered her muse from behind her. A young dragon, who bore many names over his long lifespan joined the others in his eternal gaze upon the city. Spyro turned to him.
"You... grew up here, didn't you Malefor?"
Malefor, the young drake who stood last in their party nodded in reply to Spyro. "I did. I trained here too."
Cynder's head finally parted from the expanse, turning to the former and now much, much younger Dark Master. "What happened to this place?"
"I burned it. All of it."

Goooooood this is a story I haven't looked at in years. For those who haven't watched my stuff since... well the beginning there's a VERY old Spyro fanfiction called The Malefor Chronicles I wrote based on the idea if after Spyro defeated the Dark Master, he returned as a young dragon much like Cynder had at the end of ANB. What if he had no recollection of his deeds, and was instead forced to face his sins, not as the former Dark Master, but as a young optimist who had once carried the hopes of an entire world... His memories of that era, of those events... might just be the key to solving a much greater mystery.
I never finished that story, only getting about halfway through it before I kind of got distracted by another Spyro fanfiction (THAT I ALSO NEVER FINISHED LOL ;o; )
This painting represents a future scene that went unwritten, after Malefor's memories came back and he bore the brunt of his deeds the trio of dragons, Spyro, Cynder and Malefor had to journey across the lands, visiting places to jog Malefor's memories and to find someone important to him. Here lays the old capital of the dragon empire, a proud nation that once existed in the time of Malefor. This very same city was the place where the empire died at the hieght of the Dark Master's power. Now, Malefor must face those ashes... and all those dead dragons...
---
There are more paintings and drawings I made of concepts for future unwritten chapters in this story, thought I'd share some of them for those who... well remotely care XD; If you never read it and care to deal with..... TERRIBLE WRITING (like really Im almost afraid to reread these stories) Then... here.... you go.... >>>>: https://www.deviantart.com/newlegend1/gallery/43869846/The-Malefor-Chronicles
(BTW If you do check it out be warned there's a lot of cross over between sci-fi stuff and Spyro, as is typical with most stories written by me :X There's a heavier emphasis on Spyro themed stuff in that, most of the sci-fi is a holdover from another fanfiction I wrote that came before it, The Spyro Chronicles, which featured a futuristic human civilization)

To be honest, those parts did throw me off a little bit. Felt like I was readings something out of Assassin's Creed with the Animus and all of that...xD Not that it wasn't well written, just seemed like a bit of a contrast to the rest xD
That said. What you wrote man, great stuff. You say above it's apparently terribly written, but man, I was enjoying what I was reading. I went in there in there in the knowledge you didn't finish it,and of course, by the end, I was left wanting more. You managed to make Malefor a relateable and deeper character with the way the story is written. You should be proud of that, it's not often I say that about something I read. My only regret of course is that I won't know how the story continues xD

Hah! I guess Im hard on myself because I know I could write a MUCH better story now... if I wrote at all heh. I do appreciate it, I put a lot of effort to try and make him a relatable character, and to maybe explain just what made him crack. I had... well a lot planned for the story. I think I only actually wrote half the ideas I had.
I've thought about coming back to it, it's just been so long... and I've kind of changed or modified plot points that would have been introduced later, kind of making them moot. I've just never sat back down to try to rehash the story and bring it to a satisfying conclusion. Gosh dang it
Heh in other news I've got two other stories you could read while I wrap my head around the idea of finishing it lol There's the prequel to this, The Spyro Chronicles which REALLY delves into the sci-fi and spyro stuff. Then there's the other story I did, The Journey Home which is moooooore post apocolyptic but with more spyro lol. I found a way to make it work, heh.

Hehe. From one writer to another, I suppose I can relate to both the feeling and the statement. You always look at older work as inferior (not in a bad kind of way but more because you know for a fact you can do better now) and might just title it as terrible in your own eyes. As I said, what I read back there was in no way terrible at all.
But then again, I'm the same way when I look at all the old stuff I wrote for my dA account. Can't even look at half of those as that was a time when my english was horseshite and I couldn't publish anything without having to use a translater first. Sure, my later works were better as my english grew more stable, but I still can't look at them without cringing. Can't get myself to delete the account neither though because a lot of memories are attached to those days. Gotta remember where you started, just so you can appreciate where you are now.
Guess I went on a bit of a ramble with that one hu? But yeah, it's great to hear you still think about returning to it. I know its hard to get feedback as a writer (again, as one myself I can relate to that more than anything xD), so I just wanted to let you know that what you already have there is a great read. The pace of the story is fluent, memories of the past mix well with what is going on.
The most interesting point for me was the fact you managed to perfectly establish Malefor as a young dragon. Not as the Dark Master, not as the dragon we learned to hate over the course of the series. He's relateable, has flaws and characteristics that make him human- well, dragon, but you get the point. And it makes one really question how it came to his downfall, how someone with such a kind heart could decend into such darkness. And of course it makes him relevant to current day Spyro as he seems to fear just that. Ending up exactly like him.
And yeah, I was definitly planning to read the rest of your stuff as well. You have me hungry for more, I guess you could say. I look forward to read it all.

Ah fuck it, I opened up a new word document. It's high time I... wrote something. Herp even if I don't write anything or finish it I can tell you the broad strokes. I intended for there to be many, many more scenes depicting just what could break someone like Malefor. Follow this up with the appearance of a figure who was tied to his past. This figure, the allure of catching him to learn the secrets he held would have lead Spyro and Cynder to drag Malefor with them on a journey across the old shattered Dragon Kingdom. This would have culminated in this scene above, the arrival back at the capital city.
Many of the details Ive kind of changed now, like the motivation of that figure from the past. I've tended to de-emphasize some aspects of the story or focus on others which killed some motivations or altered events. Added to that, the fact that the entire draft chapter I had made as a follow up was lost when I lost my USB and that really served as a major deterrent from me continuing.

It's good to hear my words seemed to have awoken some motivation within you to carry it on, I really look forward to see what you come up with in the chapters to come, if you do happen to finish them. Don't rush yourself man, writing is something that shouldn't be approached with haste. Know that one pretty well myself xD
And maaaaan, yeah I know what that is like. Especially when it might have been a lenghtier chapter, it's just a blow well below the belt line to lose something like that. That said, I'm confident what you'll write will surpass it in every way so just think of it as improving an already good chapter.
Other topic, but where do you reckon one could talk to you more often? Guessing it's here on FA, but just making sure. I can offer FA, dA and stuff like Skype or Discord, which are more like actual chat rooms of course xD
