Ken'pai often clutched the amulet close to him when he was feeling...unsure.
The Mechanist, for all his technical and mechanical knowledge, never could solve the riddles of sleep, and on those long, restless nights, he was prone to darker thoughts. Nagging little insecurities...deep regrets...roads not taken or those that were taken from him...
His thoughts wandered back to his childhood. Of living in the Emerald Sunscale tribe of lizardmen, deep in the forests of Satol. He remembered the one great stone wall, the one that separated the village from the woodland beyond, and the ruins that they had overgrown. The rest of the village's walls weren't nearly as thick or imposing; for the rest of Satol wasn't forbidden to them. Just those ruins, that no living person had ever seen. Such was the decree of the Emerald Sunscale, passed down for generations.
His mind's eye wandered around a little. He saw his fellow hunting mates, all listening to the patient Jin'ze, the current Master of the Hunt. Further still, he saw his father Ken'sei, the High Shaman speaking with the Chief on some matter or another. Perhaps about Ken'pai's eventual training as the next High Shaman.
He squeezed his amulet tighter.
His mind went back to his own hut then, and seeing as it had been ransacked, Ken'pai knew that his memory had gone back to that fateful day. The floorboards lifted, the secret's they concealed laid bare on the floor of the hut. Books. All of which picked up from caravan raids, all of which were never his to begin with.
All of which were forbidden. As forbidden as setting a single toe-claw into the ruins beyond the village.
He remembered the sudden clamor of his tribe all gathering in the center around the great fire. Of the Chief bellowing his name. Of him looking down with a look of anger and shame. The gaze of his father, obviously torn between his duty to his tribe and his own son. His words begging the Chief to reconsider.
But the Chief spoke only one word.
"Exile."
