Something went awry. Surely, something must have gone awry.
Running over what she had done, however, Vale could not pick out where things could have gone wrong. Every stitch was sewn where it needed to, her blood merged with the fabric as she had done many times before, and the likeness to herself a mark of her near mastery of her craft. The enchantment woven in with her blood, however, was different than usual, an inverse of her usual workings; rather than resonate what happened to the doll upon the one it represented, it was made to reflect the actions and effects upon the individual.
But as she looked upon the doll, something seemed amiss to her. As a test of the doll, she had devoured whole a would-be “crusader” who had attempted to kill her on the pretense of her being an evil witch. His still squirming form in her now bloated stomach gave her mixed feelings, a pleasant sense of fullness and a hint of nausea at being full beyond its norm. Vale kept her focus on the doll during the process, as best she could. Initially, it showed all the signs of a successful test, seeing the fabric of the doll stretch in tune with her meal’s passage down her throat, and simulating what squirming showed through her tough hide. While the body behaved as expected, however, the upper portion left her confused.
While she was sure she felt calm and overfull, the doll seemed almost…celebratory. Its arms were raised and mouth opened as though cheering with glee. Those were most certainly not the motions her body was making, and so the doll should not be behaving in such a manner. It should be matching her body’s motions, like it was with her stomach. So why was it mimicking her in one area, but not in another?
She pondered this, a thought trying to make its way to the fore of her mind that she kept sliding back, its persistence beginning to concern her. What if…what if the resonance transfer worked differently going from flesh to fabric, rather than fabric to flesh? What if there was an…emotional component to the resonance as well? What if the doll was reflecting what she was feeling?
No, something has gone awry in the enchantment. This is clearly not a reflection of my feelings.
But the thought continued to nag at the back of her mind as she awkwardly slithered over to get her tools, the contents of her stomach beginning to slow. She would be able to fix this, though it would take some time. At least she need to not worry about going too long without food as she diagnosed the problem.
