This is the nation of Wesson. Wesson is, demographically and culturally speaking, a "nation of dogs". So there's a lot of doggos, and they used to be wolves, but something funny happened, and there was one of those (relatively) advanced ancient empires you see a lot in fantasy settings. And they had a thing for eugenics. So that's why you get dog breeds that have now slowly diluted over the years, forming into the different ethnic groups from which many of the provinces derive their names.
In terms of climate, basically think of the US' east coast, except somewhat squished vertically and replace the area past the southern Appalachians with literal holes in the ground and a desert. The mountain range runs right through that northwestern section of Wesson, (which, again, you can kinda see with the names).
Wesson proper started when the Four Mothers, that would be the tribes whose territory now consist of Wesson Peak, Wesson Coast, Wesson Ridge, and Wesson Lake, banded together into a feistier Iroquois. And by feistier, I mean they started conquering people. Udedgia and its surrounding territories used to be its own independent nation, there was a bunch of different peoples up in that northeast corner (the most prominent of which being the Dovers), there were the Caulds and Gelds in the mountains, the Holssees in the swamps of the southeast...
Outside of dogs, the two most noteworthy species in Wesson are the elves, mostly concentrated near Chariot Ridge, and the cats hailing from Yuyunaka, which are primarily smaller and darker-furred, who are concentrated along the coast and in Korat Country. Chariot Ridge has been a huge source of tension for Wesson, since there's been a number of rebellions within the region as well as attempts by the "nation of elves", Chariot, to annex it for themselves. This constant tugging between these two behemoths lead Chariot Ridge to develop something of its own identity, and many revolutionaries within the region now cry for independence more than they cry for annexation by Chariot, although tensions are rather low in the late 1400's.
Meanwhile, the population of cats mostly came in as refugees some three hundred or so years ago after a failed revolution in their country. Most of them came in at the east coast, but a smaller population went across the ocean on the other side of the continent that Wesson sits on and attempted to establish the country of Korat.
Many of the Yuyunakans ended up moving in as well, and that caused something of a scuffle with the refugees (who the monarchy of Wesson didn't trust at all), Udedgia (who was exploiting their conflict to regain independence), and Wesson. However, many Wess citizens ended up rallying with the refugees, since they attempted to replace the oligarchy there with a democracy, and democracy appealed to the Wess as well at the time. So one thing led to another, some blood was spilt, but ultimately, the Wess monarchy conceded to the citizens and some steps towards making Wess (half) a republic were made, though of course the nobility were still able to remain noble and still able to govern some. However, Korat was folded into Wesson, and Udedgia lost its chance at independence.
Foxes are a smaller group within Wesson that mostly consists of migrants from Riglaster to the north, although it's been debated by historians that one of the provinces foxes are most concentrated in, Lincaster, may have been the origin of the foxes of Riglaster as opposed to the harsher, colder lands up north. The other fox-heavy province, Falsside, represents another big bubble of Wesson's fox population on a line going right down the center of the country. Just as Riglaster to the north is a "nation of foxes", there are larger populations of foxes within the Tualle States to the direct south of Wesson, the two foxy hot-spots connected directly by that line.
A small but significant group within Wesson was the kobolds. Kobolds used to occupy the areas just east of the mountains running down the wess of Weston, but they weren't very organized. They were mostly bands who lived in the woods and in caves and had a bit of a habit of stealing from Wesson's towns, so they already had the ire of the local populace.
However, one day, there was a plague that came through, and it affected the kobolds a little, but it affected the doggos a lot. So in order to protect the kobolds from this dangerous plague (read: protect the citizens of Wesson and a handful of neighboring countries that were also getting hit hard by the plague), they decided to round them up and send them all to live on a handful of reservations. These countries would continue to build the reservations up over the years to keep the kobolds from getting out, having to ship back or kill any of the early ones who did, but now all of them are basically self-sufficient.
Wesson has a very curious relationship with the nation of Lemuria, which is literally situated in giant crevices underneath Wesson, spanning across the western to southern tips and leading to the many strange and nigh inhabitable land formations in those provinces. With the loose formation of the state of Lemuria when a group of chieftains convened with Wess officials to set an elevation border, relations between the two countries have been interesting. Many Lemurians immigrated to Wesson in hopes of having a better life while Wess culture and business was exerting itself on the local populations of orcs, goblins, and wolves untouched by the eugenics programs of the pre-Wess ancient empire.
And that's a bit of a crash-course on Wesson as a whole, although their history will be documented in further detail as I continue to fill out the nation. Expect more maps...somewhere down the line!
