episode 6: the werewolf
well guys, it's been awhile since I wrote a story for my series, but her I am with another story. this one is about a new OC of mine: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/30526986/ and how some rumors made his namesake seem real. here we go...
The werewolf
Spring had just started on the island of sodor, and all the businesses that had shut down for the winter were now reopening. The engines on the mainline were especially busy, taking all kinds of goods to all parts of sodor, and even to the mainland. The heavy loads were proving to be very taxing, and even Vinnie was starting to lose it. “I know I’m meant for heavy goods…” he said as he backed into the sheds one evening, “but even I have my limits.” “I went to brendam, then to vicarstown, then knapford, and back again!” said henry, who had to stay at tidmouth for the night as he was too tired to travel back to vicarstown. “Well, if this work doesn’t stop, the next place I’ll be going is insane!” replied James. “Which is why I’ve decided to invest in a new engine.” Said a familiar voice.
It was sir topham hatt. “I’ve been well aware of how hard you’ve all been working and I’m pleased with your work, but now it’s clear you all need help. Which is why I’ve got a new engine to help out with the heavy goods.” The engines were all excited, new arrivals were always fun… mostly. “Sir, what does this engine look like?” asked Rebecca. “All I’ll tell you is that he specializes in night trains. The rest is a surprise.” He said as he walked away. “Oh boy, whenever he says it’s a surpise, it never ends well.” Groaned Gordon.
But he was wrong, the new engine arrived at knapford the next afternoon. The engine looked like a hybrid of an L&YR class 28 and and a Caledonian railway 812 class. Both of which were the basis’ for James, and Donald/Douglas respectively. Sir Topham Hatt was there to meet him. “Hello, you must be the engine I ordered, what is your name?” he asked. “My original name was Daniel, but everyone called me wolf because of how my whistle sounds like a wolf’s howling. I actually like wolf better than Daniel.” The new engine replied. “Alright then, wolf will be your new name from now on.” Replied sir topham hatt. Just then, duck arrived back from taking a goods train to harwick. “Ah, duck. You won’t be busy for a while, could you show the new engine around?” “Sure thing.” Answered duck. And the two engines puffed away, soon they were chatting away like old friends.
“I actually used to be called montague, but people called me duck because my wheels weren’t even and it looked like I waddled. The issue was immediately fixed, but the name stuck, so when I came to sodor I had my name changed.” Said duck. “I didn’t think I’d find another engine in my shoes.” Said wolf. “But it’s nice knowing we have something in common.” The two had fun and were soon back at knapford, where sir topham hatt was waiting.
“Thanks for showing wolf around.” He said “now I need you to take the harwick commuter train.” “Sure thing.” duck answered, and he puffed away. “Now then wolf.” Said sir topham hatt, “you specialize in night trains right?” “I do.” Answered wolf. “Alright then, tonight you will take the midnight goods to vicarstown.” “Yes, sir.” Said wolf, and he puffed away to the sheds to get some rest.
That evening he arrived at knapford harbor where his train was waiting. “Alright then, let’s do this” he said as he coupled up to the train. And with a blast of his whistle, he set off. As he puffed along, he saw James (who offered to take the flying kipper for henry that evening). Wolf blew his whistle as they passed by. James then rushed away in fright, leaving wolf confused. Thankfully the rest of the night as normal, at least for wolf. But for James he was too frightened to get much rest.
The next day the other engines noticed that James was looking tired. “Hey big red, is something wrong?” asked Vinnie. “y-yes…” answered James. “I t-think that new engine might be a w-werewolf.” Rebecca, and henry let out noticeable gasps, but the other engines weren’t convinced. “A werewolf, oh please.” Scoffed Alfred. “It’s true” cried James. “I passed him when pulling the flying kipper and he howled at me, I ran away as fast as I could.” A few of the engines still weren’t entirely convinced, but they were unnerved all the same.
The next night henry was pulling the flying kipper. As he puffed along he saw wolf who offered to take the mail train for Percy. Henry was a bit nervous, but he whistled to him. Wolf whistled back, but it sounded a lot like howling. “Oh, no!” cried henry, and he ran away as fast as he could. Wolf puffed on, now very confused.
The next day henry told the other engines about what happened, and now they were all on edge. The news soon spread down the line. Phillip was shunting some trucks when he saw Edward who was getting ready to take the local train. He raced up towards him. “Oh, hey there Phillip, what are you up to today?” Edward asked. “I’ve heard that the new engine is a werewolf, do you know what that is?” Phillip asked. “I don’t entirely know what a werewolf is, but from what I’ve heard it’s someone who turns into a wolf every time night comes” Edward replied. “But I don’t believe the new engine is actually a werewolf, though, and you shouldn’t believe the rumors either.” “Alright, thanks Edward.” Said Phillip, and he rushed back to the yard.
Edward wasn’t the only one who didn’t believe the rumors, sir topham hatt didn’t believe any of them either, and that evening he arrived at the sheds to talk to the engines.
“I’ve been hearing quite a bit about how the new engine is a werewolf, and I want to know where all this bovine excrement came from.” He said sternly. “He howled at me while I was taking the flying kipper for henry” said James. “The same thing happened to me last night” replied henry. I whistled to him as I passed by, and he howled at me too. “I know my name is wolf, but I’m not a werewolf.” Said a voice. Everyone looked to the turntable, and were surprised to see wolf standing on it.
“My real name wasn’t always wolf” he continued. “It was Daniel, but I changed it to wolf because of how similar my whistle sounds to a wolf’s howling.” He let out a long blast of his whistle to prove his point. The other engines looked on in silence, until at last henry spoke up. “On behalf of everyone, including myself, I sincerely apologize for the rumors.” He said. “It’s quite alright” replied wolf “you know, it was actually pretty funny.” He added. “this is actually the first time anyone has referred to me as a werewolf, but I assure you that I’m not, and I don’t go blowing myself up like a balloon either.” He finished. Everyone laughed at that final statement.
Despite the rumors, wolf actually proved himself. He would mostly work at night taking the midnight goods, and would sometimes even take the mail train, or the flying kipper to give the other engines a rest. And sometimes he’d even work during the day. Everyone likes wolf, and wolf loves his new life on sodor.
