Yup, Saint Maw is actually a curse put on Buddy for being a shit child by a priest. Saint is supposed to steer Buddy towards being a more virtuous being, but since the curse wasn't designed with goo critters in mind Buddy made him into a tail-maw. Saint is still super judgy and annoying, but Buddy can loosen him up a bit and make him have some fun. XD
