I think it's because she was infected by something miniscule, a reminscient of the alien god, rather than the alien god itself.

my theory is this particular variation of the idol might actually be an older evolution, something weaker than the current one, meaning it's very weak by comparison, and (in an ideal world) would be weak enough for its host to actually slave it to their will.

another theory is maybe she has some special genetic thing that makes the black idol have either less of an effect on her or somehow allows her mind to remain intact and might eventually lead to finding some useful information on the creature in a more controlled setting, as having a host that is actually intact and still somewhat in control would make it easier

Maybe it's something to do with the religion we saw in the previous chapter.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the "biological traces" that her scanner couldn't identify in that water she drank. Unlike the others, who were driven mad by it's apparent psychic influence or taken by a sentient whole in their entirety, it seems she was more "infected" by something microbial, which has altered her on a biological level, but not as much on a psychological level. What was eluded to at the end of the previous chapter is that she might well be fully intact mentally, but simply physically malformed now.

Essentially, I think the "how" of her change is they key. Given the dead world it came from, it may also be a precursor to the other samples.

She weeps. She feels. She's still in there. The question still remains. Can she be saved, or is she too far gone for previous methods of treatment to succeed? I suppose only time will tell.

I love how all the extra eyes look where she's looking. Julia's definitely trying, but I can't imagine how hard it is for her. What she's feeling, experiencing.
