Dio Guevera had been a child soldier at the mercy of warlords in Iejana ever since his village was pillaged by militants, having been forced to execute his own mother as part of their cruel initiation. Shattered and having resigned himself to a violent grave, he followed his captors' orders without hesitation and little expectation to survive.
Eventually, Dio was tasked with clearing out a cave network, which he accepted without question. With assault rifle and flashlight in hand, he marched into the caverns, losing himself in the geological maze. Alone and wandering aimlessly in the dark, he jumped at the nearest sound and unwittingly proceeded to blind and gun down the wild lucario that spooked him. He hadn't counted on its riolu child being there, her emotional emanations overwhelming his own as he collapsed to his knees and accepted his fate at her hands.
Suffice to say that Dio was very confused when the riolu, far from wanting him dead, felt sorry for him.

Forgotten Army may focus on a renegade military unit of uplifted pokémon, but the unit itself owes a lot of respect to Dio Guevera, a former Iejanan child soldier who later joined the Unovan military after fleeing with Carine, the riolu he came to rely on as his emotional and moral anchor since this fateful encounter.
