As a gift for a friend, I took the time to sit down and work on the first Veve I've done properly in years. Though blurry, and a bit difficult to see here, this Veve is a freehand for Mama Brigitte, the only White Loa, of Celtic origin. Mama Brigitte is the Graveyard Loa, a protector of spirits and ward against evil presences. She is said to be golden-red haired, with emerald eyes and fair skin. She is the Patron Loa of foul-language, lust, creativity, women, protection, and graveyards. Her sacred symbols, beside the cross, as Black Roosters and Horses, as well as Elm and Willow trees.
This piece was properly blessed following Vodou rites, and has been sealed, purified and "imbued" as it were, with a mixture of Brigitte's chosen elements: A touch of fire, a touch of blood, a fine misting of peppered liquor (whiskey, in this case, though her favorite is rum), and a bit of salt. As an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church, and a student of esoteric religious rites and symbolism, this isn't the first Veve I've prepared for a friend or loved one, but it's definitely the largest.
I just thought I'd share. I'm not a great freehand painter, but Veve aren't 100% required to be absolutely spot-on accurate. They're not like Demonic summoning circles; the materials and elements of the piece can vary wildly from person to person, and use to use. It's the intention behind the rite that makes them powerful tokens of luck, both good and bad, depending on how you use them.
