12"x16". gouache.
This was made as a test for a technique I want to get better at, as it will help me work more efficiently - everything takes me so long now:
1. Initial pencil drawing on chipboard. Scanned in at high resolution.
2. Simply blocked in colors digitally with photoshop, preserved chipboard texture.
3. Printed out laser color copy and affixed to wood with lots of clear acrylic medium.
4. Finished the painting with gouache.
Digitally I only worried about the mid-range to darks, and I saved the mid-range to highlights for actual paint, since that tends to be about detail work anyway.
After the digital stage, the image is still flexible enough to be changed to incorporate client feedback. When that's good, I can then use that as the underwork for the painted finish.
I'm happy with this method, learned a lot, and will be using it to help me catch up with what I have to do.

Now this takes me back to when I would sit in front of the television for hours on a saturday morning. I actually have the box set of the complete run of the series and to me this is simply gorgeous. You have done an excellent job here, sir, I would even go so far to call it a masterpiece. Hopefully, you don't have to be a complete and total geek to appreciate it.
Dang, that's an awesome piece. Nice flow of motion and good, strong silhouette, something hard to do with Vengie's big ol' wings.
I played around with a similar computer assisted underpainting style style (only with acrylics instead of gouache, printed out onto 120 hotpress watercolor paper via inkjet printer) and rather liked the results. Then I got lazy and went back to plain old watercolors.
Sweet stuff!

Did you have issues with the inkjet print smudging or bleeding with the application of waterbased paint? I did, but tried to make use of it, rather than fight it - which is why I came up tinting my linework first so that if it did bleed, it would work with the added color. Curious to know how your own experiment went.
I don't remember having any, but then again, I was working with some pretty heavy media with no washes. I think I also laid down a fine mist of clear coat before I started. Not recommended for watercolor/gouache, but worked fine with Acrylics. Nowadays, you can get waterproof inkjet ink for the printers, but that wasn't available when I was working these.

It's his first go at writing a novel based on his Hell paintings.

It's definitely at least worth a checkout from the library!
