This is a reupload of my previous pirate island map. Basically I never had a completely good feeling by using an actual island, Saint Bartholomew. The general location at the Lesser Antilles and its outlines however are perfect, so I decided to rework the whole file. Removed my handwriting and used an historical font for better readability, renamed the locations.
Most important, the fortification of the harbour channel is now consisting of two forts: The official Fort Louis held by the French governor, and an entrenchment on the other side built and armed by the pirates. They need to cooperate in terms of an efficient devence.
Île de Rais was named after the infamous Gilles de Rais, a French nobleman who had fought on side of Jeanne d'Arc, but was charged for black magic and the mass murder of an copious amount of children. His biography is the inspiration for the tale of Bluebeard.
The little island is part of the Windward Islands, as its real world modell. Being too small for bigger settlements, it as little use for the French crown. Therefore, the governor Monsieur de Croix has to rely on pirates for business and protection.
Île de Rais could be seen as the French counterpart of Tortuga, but the crews who throw anchor at Port Lupercales are quite diverse and international. The dominant character however is the Cataln/French pirate leader Jaqard leSang, a red fox. In summary, the pirate captains of Île de Rais are younger and wilder, more chaotic then the ones of Tortuga.
