Sly Cooper Redesigns: Neyla
I’ve already drawn my version of Neyla 2000 times, but I wanted to try something slightly new this go around. Obviously I’m forever going to picture her as a cat instead of a tigress, that’s never gonna change, but I always wondered: what if she was a practicing Muslim, and how would that affect her dress?
I doubt such influences were ever in mind for her initial concept since Indian women can wear head scarves for any sorta reason, but I liked to interpret it specifically as a hijab worn for cultural/religious purposes. Going along with that, I put her in an outfit that was much less revealing while still making it efficient to run around in. It’s a bit random, but I thought it would be neat to interpret as a part of her identity.
Not shown in my first-pass concept, but I later started drawing her with spiky stylized shoulder fur and. I couldn’t give that up. So she has stupid AF shoulder windows and I don’t even care. I DO WHAT I WANT.
I have ideas for a redesign of her dress in Rajan’s ball too but I’ll save that for another time~

In other news, I can't exactly see Muslim practicing in a British university, and I don't know the doctrines, but I can't see "homework scam ring" Neyla practicing Muslim.
Still, it fits her Indian backstory as a guttersnipe in New Delhi, and the design looks like it could fit into a Sly Quadrilogy remake.

1. She doesn’t have to be GOOD at following her religion lol that’s like saying all practicing Christians go to church every Sunday. Sometimes people carry pieces of their religion due to upbringing or they obscure their practices to the point they aren’t traditional anymore. Or maybe she wants to be better but her morality prevents her.
Obviously I’m not going by game canon evidence and I already said the developers doubtfully pulled any of that for influence.
2. ... why would a Muslim not go to a British university? Islam is I think the second largest religion practiced in the UK.
