Being the first non-human field officer was originally just for good press. "Look at how progressive we have become/Look at how the sergals have proved themselves" and all that bullshit. That was what Captain Atia Breaenna was originally planned on, being a publicity stunt for the Federation. Despite her commissioned rank, she was sent off to oversee an Anti-Piracy operation near the Batarian Hegemony/Federation border, and calling it "Piracy" was an overstatement. Mainly it was just stopping smugglers from entering and leaving Federation space, seizing Illegal cargo from illicit drugs to sapient trafficking. A bit of frustration, and with a few favors promised to the Captain of the UFN Wake Island, she managed to wage a small, personal war against the Batarian pirates within and across the border, raising tensions between the Federation and Hegemony.

Her sergal upbringing wasn't lost during her time at the Academy, as she leads her men in aggressive assaults from the front. The marines under her command try their best to keep up with her, mainly to try and keep her aggressive nature from getting herself into too much trouble. She cares about the men in her command, and a few marines have "forked" their tongues in accordance to sergal cultural traditions under her command, something highly discouraged by the medical team and High Command.
