I really wish Chimchar/Monferno/Infernape would be stuck as one of Ash's permanent pokemon, as you said, they two are a great match. Considering how awesome they are, and how complex Chimchar's story has been compared to the other pokemon introduced this series, I have a feeling the fire money will have some big things happen to him.
Besides, Ash kept Charizard and Bulbasaur for a good long while, perhaps Monferno will get the same treatment.
And I CANNOT wait for when it evolves into an Infernape!
