When pushed to their limits and no easy way out Drakeans can expend all the stamina they have to manipulate an immense amount of aether, this huge concentration of controlled aether is known as an 'Aethercull.' Not all Drakeans can simply do this and need to have a history of using aether regularly to train themselves to successfully perform the act.
The brothers were ambushed by bandits while searching around some ruins, Argent took the brunt of the damage before Zevrant just couldn't stand back and let his brother be hurt any longer, he had to end it quickly and as such began to prepare an Aethercull.
For sure, the bandits won't be standing after he's done but neither will Zevrant, the extensive toll it takes on him will knock him unconscious for a good while. Thankfully Argent will be able to get Zevrant to a safe place once the aftermath is over, as well as a lecture on putting himself at such risk once he's up again.
