I've always enjoyed the architecture of layered man-made structures on the side of hills or mountains. The ability to make ingenious use of little available spaces is a technique practiced often by the Japanese, but when coal was found in the steep valleys of South Wales, it was the developers there who had to learn the tricks of the trade. 200 years on, most of their work still stands, and continues to host several hundred people who live peacefully within the walls of the valley.
