I'd say try writing out responses, but having a dagger pointed your way doesn't inspire the best thinking. Unless he suddenly lost the ability to write common (assuming he could from the start). Would be admittedly amusing if he tried writing common and while he saw it that way, every human would only see Istralla writing. :P

My question is, even if he cannot write it himself, can he magically read stuff that is written just as he can understand words that are spoken?
I also cannot wait for his friend to catch up with him somehow. Since I imagine the Istrala are faster than a horse when going through uncertain terrain, and that it would be fairly difficult to track something that can fly even if you know the general direction, I think it will likely take him 2-3 days more to catch up if he is a very good tracker and the horse can keep going.
