Illustration for his story "Thieves" . This is the story fragment:
" Maneki’s breath quickened as she stared at the male guard. He moved closer to her cautiously. His gaze was trained on her own until he reached her. “Let’s just see what you’ve pilfered so far shall we?” he asked as he bent his knees to grab the satchel Maneki had brought with her. Unseen the calico bent her right hand down and grabbed something small from the cuff around her right wrist. Before the guard could react, she threw the item down and closed her eyes as the bright flash caught the male by surprise. He recoiled in shock as the small explosive went off and blinded him suddenly. The male moved back and rubbed his eyes with his free hand. “Damn it!” he exclaimed as he focused his mind on his vision, trying to make out the thief in the sea of white that was his sight. A moment later and his vision began to clear. What met his eyes was something he expected, but hadn’t wanted to see. In her moment of reprieve, Maneki had pulled two knives out and held them in front of herself defensively now. “Fuck…I thought I had her. All I had to do was bring her to Bartholomew and it would have been over. Maybe he would have even stopped focusing on Amber for a bit. None of the other guards patrol this area. So backup isn’t going to come. I’ll have to take her down.” he thought to himself as he resumed a two handed grip on his sword, his left foot forward. “I’ll admit; you surprised me thief. It won’t happen again.” he said seriously as he geared himself up. Maneki measured the distance between herself and the snow leopard male. He was standing in front of the hallway; her only exit. She could try to get around him, but in these close quarters he would likely get the upper hand. Despite her preference not to; fighting was her only real option here.
The movement was swift; almost unnoticeable as the female feline flicked her right wrist forward. A flash of metal in the torchlight was the only warning the guard received as he gasped in near panic. He moved his sword to the left and barely deflected the projectile weapon that was on a course for his forehead. He heard the clink of the knife as it clattered to the ground and looked back up to see Maneki in motion. She had moved to his right, the opposite direction his sword had just been moved to. She almost bounced off the wall and came at him with a speed he didn’t know she could reach. Her knife swipe was barely parried by the guard as he pushed her back with all his strength. Quickly he swung his own sword at her now in counterattack, but he only caught the cloak she wore. He raised an eyebrow as instead of cleaving through the flimsy looking cloth and into her body as he’d expected to, the sword didn’t scratch the item. “Enchanted clothes huh? They won’t help you for long.” he said as he stepped back. Maneki knew this to be true herself. She could feel the difference in their strengths from that exchange. If she was to come out on top; she had to strike him hard and fast. And there was only one technique she knew that could do it. "
