The reward for scritches!
Yay all that pushing through their dense, tough coats payed off! The "Hey human you're not so bad, here's a kiss for ya" was well received by me =)
This particular wolf was somewhat emotionally aloof but sociable, and towards the end of his life, he showed me a side of him that melted my heart. Wolves are such sensitive creatures.

Very sensitive and very protective over those they view as friends, and especially family. I've even come across a few wild ones that were sociable with humans. There was one particular wolf pack, a pretty small one of maybe no more than 5, up in Canada that, every day, would visit a family of 3 that lived, like, a mile from their den. The dad of the family said they were just as you'd expect, wary and defensive, and he was about to grab his shotgun to scare them off when his wife hit him over the head with a frying pan. Apparently, the wolves were hungry, and it had been a very bad winter for them, so they gave the wolves quite a lot of meat they'd managed to stock up on. Since then, they'd always come back, and the dad joked about how his expenses jumped up a lot since he kept feeding several grown wolves.
Still, I'm sad to hear this lovely wolf is gone, I hope he lived a great life.

Well, it's okay to feed them if you're going to commit to them for life, and understand every dimension of the wolves personality and pack dynamic because they WILL gravitate to you, and they WILL include you into the pack... The problem is, people actually fed wolves in Yellowstone to the point where the wolves became dependent on them, and the wolves literally starved to death when those people left! (Their vacation was over, the wolf's nightmare began!) If people cannot be responsible for a pack of wolves and their offspring for LIFE, people should not be feeding the wolves, honestly.
I agree, you shouldn't do it willy-nilly or because you want to. So many wolves starved to death then, I remember hearing about it. That made me extremely angry. This family, though, was aware of this and continued to feed them. From what I heard about since then, the pack is still fine, but their dependency isn't as major as the Yellowstone wolves. With a bit of understanding between the family and the pack leader, which was rather incredible to me at the time but makes much more sense now that I'm older and understand wolves more, the pack hunt as they always have, and only come over for a few reasons, the most important one being a bad winter hunt, followed by newborns, which would require more food for the mothers.
Yes, for sure :) We got some people who were nervous and apprehensive and would just softly pet the wolves, if the wolves could roll their eyes I'm sure they would have XD They were very large, imposing creatures though, so for many when they saw them for the first time, were intimidated... You just have to move passed that and forget every idiotic werewolf move and red riding hood story about them because they're NOT those creatures, never were!
