The time was surely growing near for two partnered wyverns to bring their long-gestating desire for a family together to fruition. The richness of the flourishing growth and life around them, bathed in warm wandering sun rays, complimented their fertile forms as the sounds of the flowing stream and inhabitants of the forest drifted around them. The gently rolling light through the trees accentuated the wide, round, bulging shapes of their heavy bellies; making them seem to glow with health and vibrancy across their impressive volume settled on the sleek, entwined forms of the relaxing wyvern lovers. Despite the tranquility and beauty of the day and the warmth on their taut hide, the burdens they shared were wearing on their patience. Zera had been somewhat concerned for PrismWing bearing her family’s whelps, given the colorful glaive’s smaller stature and her father’s notoriously intimidating size. However, PrismWing despite her understandable discomfort lately was thriving. What had surprised Zera were the results that her own massive belly now clearly displayed from her union with PrismWing’s father. SkyShadow was oddly charming much like his daughter, but honestly average physically, and yet Zera found herself every bit as wide and heavy as her partner now accounting for scale. So much for having it easy! She grumbled to herself about how this couldn’t entirely be her fault and that the rascal SkyShadow was hiding something in his lineage.
Zera huffed as she sat up, her belly settling widely above her hips, making her spread her legs out and curl her tail up to try and get comfortable as PrismWing shifted and returned the annoyed snort reclining against her mate. Usually Zera was one to try and temper the grumpy moods between them, but today even the bigger black and white glaive was fed up. “I swear the next male that walks by and says even a word…they’ll have a deathwish.” PrismWing grunted in agreement as Zera continued. “I don’t think it can be much longer...” she started before PrismWing jumped in.
“They don’t realize how good they have it.” She started. “THEY don’t have to carry the whelps. THEY don’t have to do anything…just strut around and let us do all the work.” PrismWing continued, much to Zera’s agreement.
The sentiments continued between them as the two laden mothers to be whipped themselves up, venting and filling their bellies and words with fiery frustration. Both knowing exactly what the other was feeling, feeding off each other’s emotions and, in a way, fueling their bond. Woe is to the next male that stumbled upon them as their fussing in agreement boiled over.
Meanwhile, further downstream, Zera’s father was stalking the edges of the water, body low and eyes peeled at a huge, dark shape gliding through the shallows. What a meal this fish would make! And how his PrismWing and Zera would enjoy it! The poor girls were heavy and due soon, and their frustration grew more apparent every day. At first Zera seemed she would be able to manage the burden of pregnancy with little effort, but it seemed SkyShadow’s seed was stronger than he had anticipated, and Zera’s size made it obvious their whelps would be fitting for his clan’s reputation. He hadn’t entirely approved of the pairing at first, but the happiness it brought them had warmed him up to PrismWing’s father, even if Khaz found him rather hapless still.
With one solid lunging action that appeared to defy possibility the veteran glaive dove into the water, and in an instant his jaws were around the huge fish and it was ripped from its watery home. With a leap back to the shore that was somewhat less graceful but every bit as quick Khaz hacked the barbs and other unpleasant bits from his catch with his still razor-sharp claws. Clutching it with some pride, he began to waddle his way up the stream on his hind legs slowly. This would no doubt brighten the day of his daughter and her partner and be another good meal for them and his soon-to-arrive members of his clan including his own whelps.
Khaz had lived a life of incredible upheaval and struggle, and his body was like an a canvas showing narrow victories and harsh lessons. Many rival pack leaders had mistaken his scars for weakness and ineptitude. It was a mistake, and one the clever older glaive had used many times to lure strangers into direct combat where he had, so far, still never lost. Against great beasts he was fearless, against those that walked on two legs he was crafty, and in the face of the wrath that nature can bring to the world he was steely.
However, none of it could prepare him for what met him as he pushed his way into the clearing; the light shining off the shapes of the huge bellies distended proudly with the future. For a moment Khaz was smiling, for Zera did make him so proud; she would be a good protector for the clan and she was every bit as shrewd as her mother. And PrismWing was a tie to other races and civilizations; a step towards a future of cooperation. But as his eyes met theirs, his smile faded; the glares were unlike anything he had seen before and it extinguished the warmth in his expression, ears lowering and crests slowly sinking. Almost nothing frightened Khaz, but for the first time in many years he felt the tightness of it in his throat as he swallowed as PrismWing hissed at him, daring him to say one word with Zera glaring at him almost every bit his size and certainly more his mass at this point. Luckily Khaz was wise in his years, and discretion was not beneath him. There was no choice.
His eyes never leaving theirs now, Khaz bent down, agonizingly slow, his snout locked in parallel with theirs on his long neck as he bent down, placing his tribute before them. One leg slowly behind the other he backed away as Zera snorted at him and PrismWing’s eyes were as sharp and long as any claws that had wished to gouge his eyes. Once the trees obscured him he galloped away through the brush with a rustle that slowly dissipated.
PrismWing sneered. “That’s a start I guess…”

This is a HUGE and incredibly detailed image from Leetah showing off her wonderful background skills depicting yet another humorous take on this idea involving these characters. Everything feels so lush here and there are so many small details you can really take in the image outside of the three main characters. It was incredibly generous to put so much effort into making something silly like this feel so alive and fleshed out. Poor Khaz, I do love his expression though! And I must admit I rather like how wide Zera and Prism look here; it makes their own expressions rather understandable even at a glance.
That fish sure looks tasty!
