And I've noticed across different media an inverse relationship between an artist's satisfaction with his work and audience reception. Offhand I can think of the original Star Wars, which Lucas was so pessimistic about he didn't even go to the first screenings.

It's just an opaque watercolor, basically. With watercolors you can only work light to dark, unless you do something to remove the paint from the paper, but since gouache is opaque, you can work in either direction, within limits. Also, I'm still very 'meh' about this piece. Heh.
