Hey look, something that isn't Marvel or live action! XD Welcome back to another KatNee Movie Date. Today we're gonna dive into "Nee's Never Seen 'Rio'". So many birdies, so many colors, and music you can't help but bop along to. And I think it was around here that we found the best method of watching our movies and staying relatively in sync: Playstation 3 and 4. At their slowest fast forward speed at 1.5x we can still hear the dialogue and read the closed captioning or subtitles, so if one of us does get ahead the other can fast forward to that part without really missing anything. To this day it's my preferred Movie Date viewing device for watching movies and also editing the Movie Date logs.
Title Card: Our first Movie Date where the main protagonists aren't humanoid. XD Luckily this movie had costumes that looked EXACTLY like them. ... I still question that. Anyway, after seeing some of Nee's title cards from last year I decided I needed to put more effort into mine, or at least make them funnier. This scene from Rio was a good choice, but what would cause Katney to knock Nee flat on his back with a foot at his throat? Well, we did just watch 5 Marvel movies in quick succession... I needed more animation at that point. ^^ I think Nee did actually suggest Iron Man 3 as his next movie but I can't say I reacted the way I did in the title card. ... Although that memory IS awfully fuzzy. ... Oh, well! ^^ And yes, Big Hero 6 is the next Movie Date. It's Marvel, but it's animated, not in the MCU, and I actually wanted to see it. ^^
Once again, Da Rulez!
1) We watch these movies from our respective countries. We log into our internet messenger of choice, choose a movie, count down to start, and type our reactions and commentary accordingly.
2) It has to be a movie only one of us has seen before. The only exception is if it's part of a film series and one of us wishes to watch it together, but it will still be added to their movie total tally. (Example: Katney's already seen Batman Forever, but Nee wants it included in the Movie Date entries.)
3) If neither of us has seen a particular movie one of us has to watch it first. Besides syncing issues leading to possible spoilers who would draw the title card? X3
4) Movies that we've seen before but haven't watched in several years and remember very little of may be included.
5) Movies that have only been seen in bits and pieces may be included as long as certain plot points/twists haven't been revealed. There may be some minor exceptions if it's included in a film series and/or heavily parodied.
6) TV and internet shows will be included. One disk/season will be considered one movie. 5 to 6 episodes maximum per viewing and marked as a completed movie by the end of the disk/season. Internet shows without a physical copy will be calculated either by episode run times or by season.
7) While Katney does her best to add movie descriptions these logs are from some time ago and some of our reactions may have to be taken out of context.
8) The logs will be posted as they were originally written, except self-corrected typos will be removed and some strong language will be censored. The censored word will usually be replaced with "(toast)" or some other variation depending on the situation. There may be some films where this rule will be ignored.
9) In the descriptions the actor's name may only be listed in regards to the character they play if we refer to them as such or as another character they've played in our commentary.
10) Movies are watched from beginning to end, so if you intend to watch these movies beware of spoilers.
11) More rules can be added at any time.

(The sun rises over Rio de Janeiro as the title appears on screen. We sweep back towards the tropical jungles where the local birds begin to dance and sing "Real in Rio." Their singing awakens a blue macaw hatchling, later named Blu, sleeping in a nest in a hollow tree. He watches the birds soaring and dancing, and watches a few other hatchlings learn to fly. He prepares to follow their example... until suddenly several of the birds are captured and caged while others escape. Baby Blu falls out of his nest in a panic and lands on the ground, looking around in frightened silence until he, too, is caged and loaded into a transport plane.)
Katney: What a view

Katney: Nominated for an Oscar, but lost to Man or Muppet ^^

Katney: And here's our "hero"

Katney: They killed the music!
(Elsewhere in a snowy environment the caption reads "(not Rio)", but we soon learn it's Moose Lake, Minnesota. Baby Blu is in a truck bearing the logo for exotic pets. The rear hatch is close to opening and does as the driver of the truck struggles to break before running a red light. One of the boxes falls out the back, the driver unaware. The box contains Baby Blu, all alone and frightened. The top of the box is opened and a young girl wearing glasses peers inside. This is Linda Gunderson. She reaches in and gently scoops up the baby bird, assuring him that it's alright. She gently strokes his head, "I'll take care of you." She snuggles him against her cheek when he feels safe.)
Nee: LOL Not rio
Katney: Nope, sure ain't. Very cold
Katney: Lost cargo
Nee: It would bite her in real life
Katney: Yeeeeeeeeeep
(Next we pan over a series of pictures and newspaper clippings where we see Linda and Blu growing up. They celebrate birthdays, win spelling bees, and go to prom. Yeesh. We finish on a recent picture of them 15 years older. Blu helps Linda wake up in the morning by imitating an alarm clock, and then a car alarm. Blu never learned to fly so he finds creative ways to get around, such as using rings on the ceilings, climbing, and rolling around on toy cars. He dances on Linda's computer keyboard to log into it and opens the curtains to the front window of their bookstore, Blue Macaw Books, and flips the sign from Closed to Open.)

Katney: He's smart.
(Later in the day Linda talks on the phone with her mother saying she can't visit because there's no one who can bird-sit. She sets a cup of hot cocoa and a plate of cookies on the counter by the front window for Blu. He delights in the perfect ratio of marshmallows to cocoa until Canadian geese throw snowballs at the window. They mock him for being a nerdy pet who can't migrate. They're soon chased off by a young man who stumbles around on the ice outside. He sees Blu through the window and hurries to get inside, but not before face planting into the glass. Once inside he tells Linda that he traveled 6,000 miles looking for Blu.)
Katney: He gets hot chocolate AND cookies
Nee: O.o waaaaaaaaaaant
Katney: Enter romantic interest
Nee: for Blu?
(The man is Tulio Monteiro, Doctor of Ornithology at the Conservation Center of Rio de Janeiro. Tulio is very passionate about his job, as he squawks at birds and mimics bird behavior to communicate with them, though he ends up freaking out Blu. Tulio tells Linda that Blu may be the last male blue macaw in the world, and he would like to arrange a trip for the pair to travel to Rio so that Blu can mate with the female they have. Blu gulps. X3 Linda is hesitant as she doesn't like traveling and admits that Blu can't even fly. Tulio tries to prove her wrong and tosses Blu across the room, expecting instinct to take over. Blu flaps his wings and quickly falls to the ground. "What kind of doctor are you?" Blu scoffs. Linda shows Tulio out, but he begs her to reconsider. "If we don't do this, his whole species will be gone! Just think about it.")
Katney: Blu doesn't approve
Nee: LOL
Katney: Heehee
(That night Blu studies a book about flying an airplane and draws notes to accommodate for birds. He lines a long table with Christmas tree lights to look like a airport runway. "Just keep it simple. Thrust, lift, drag, and weight." He runs down the table but hesitates at the last moment before he slips and falls off the table, tangled in the lights. Linda comes down the stairs and beholds the sight, and Blu gives a sheepish smile. Later Blu sits on Linda's knee. "... I promised I would always look out for you, didn't I? And have I ever broken a promise? I'm scared, too, but I wouldn't make you do this if it wasn't the right thing to do." Though they don't speak the same language they understand each other. Blu agrees to the blind date in Rio.)
Nee: ... and Pixar all just facepalms
Katney: Yeah, I don't know what the Newt plotline was beyond saving the species and such, but... yeah
Nee: it's exactly the same... down to the colour of the animals
Katney: Yeah, but the newt didn't wanna fly XD
Katney: ::snickers:: She doesn't seem too surprised
Nee: even with the male being a pet and the female being the street wise feral ^^
(Blu and Linda arrive in Rio as "Let Me Fly To Rio" plays. The lyrics go, "Let me take you to Rio, Rio/Fly over the ocean like an eagle, eagle/Then we can chill in my gazebo, gazebo." They drive with Tulio in his Jeep, Blu in the back in a birdcage. Linda applies some sun lotion to her face, then applies a streak to Blu's beak. They stop as people pass in front of them, some dressed for Carnaval tomorrow night. Linda reacts to a woman wearing a feathered headdress and a sequined swimsuit. "Is she a performer?" Linda asks. "No, in fact, she's my dentist!" Tulio replies.)

Nee: <Cam> ... I want that dentist
Katney: <Sky> Want her to do what? ::narrows eyes::
Nee: <Cam> ... >_> get me teeth checked
(A yellow canary named Nico and a large red-crested cardinal named Pedro land on Blu's cage and greet him in Portuguese. The birds then speak in English when they realize Blu is a tourist. Blu admits that he's there to meet a girl and they advise him to make the first move and give him a few tips. The Jeep drives on and the two birds fly away.)
Katney: Lucky birds are bilingual XD
(Blu, Linda, and Tulio arrive at the Conservation Center and enter the treatment room. As he enters Tulio is almost instantly covered in birds, a few of them are small and round. "I'm their great, big mama bird," Tulio explains, pouring bird seed into his mouth and allowing one of the birds to feed. Eeeeeewwww. Moving along they pass by various injured birds, many rescued from smugglers. He shows them a shivering and sickly looking sulphur-crested cockatoo that they brought in the night before. Blu wishes the cockatoo to get well soon, and the cockatoo glares at him.)
Nee: freak

Nee: ... villian
Nee: calling it now
(The female blue macaw is "spirited" so she is kept in a private enclosure where Blu is forced into. Linda and Tulio watch the progress on a monitor. As Blu wonders through the enclosure he notices Jewel, voiced by Anne Hathaway, flying in slow motion in front of a light, appearing elegant and angelic. Blu is awestruck. "What were they talking about? She's like an angel. ... An angel who's getting really close--" Jewel tackles Blu and pins him to the ground, her talons at his throat, and questions him in Portuguese. Blu chokes, "You're standing on my throat." She lets him up and speaks in English when she realizes he is American and the same species. She quickly pulls Blu away and leads him up a tree, which he climbs using pegs in the trunk.)
Nee: <Cam> Angel
Katney: Enter the Jewel
(Blu believes Jewel is hurrying them along to mate and moves in to kiss her, but she pushes him off, telling him she's actually trying to escape through a nearby ventilation shaft. She becomes angered when she realizes what he was planning. "We just met!" Tulio decides they need some help so he dims the lights and lowers a disco ball beside Blu, playing "Say You, Say Me" by Lionel Richie. Jewel tackles Blu to the ground and they briefly end up in a romantic looking pose. Linda blinks at how fast that was. Tulio suggests they give the birds some privacy and steps out with her. Linda expresses her hesitation but Tulio assures her that their best guard Sylvio will be watching. Jewel continues to attack Blu.)
Katney: ... Does the guy know anything about setting the mood for birds?
(Later Sylvio dances to samba music on the radio, tearing off his shirt and pants to reveal a gold undershirt and matching briefs. He stops dancing when he hears metal clattering. He enters the treatment room and finds the cockatoo on the floor. Sylvio scoops the shivering bird up... when suddenly the cockatoo shoves a cloth over Sylvio's mouth and knocks him out. Everyone, meet Nigel. Nigel takes Sylvio's ring of keys and unlocks another door where a human shadow approaches. Meanwhile Blu is awakened by Jewel pounding the grate over the ventilation shaft with a rock and complains. Jewel retorts that she's trying to escape, even though Blu thinks her cage is awesome. "You would rather be with a human than with your own kind?!" "Well that human has given me love and affection for the past 15 years whereas my own kind try to strangle me after 15 seconds!" Jewel retorts that she lost everything because of humans and can't trust them. The door suddenly opens and in a matter of moments both birds are in a burlap bag.)
Nee: ... didn't need to see that
Katney: Nope
Nee: CALLED IT!
Katney: Bird had cholorfoam!
(Meanwhile Linda and Tulio sit outside a restaurant having dinner. They discuss their favorite birds, Linda's is the blue macaw and Tulio's is the spotted owl. "I've always been mesmerized by those big... round... intelligent eyes," Tulio finds himself staring into Linda's eyes. Suddenly a waiter arrives and loudly laughs, carving picanha at their table. A second waiter serves chicken hearts flambe style. Before they can eat Tulio's cell phone rings. He answers and his face falls in worry. At the center a police car sits outside. Linda collapses at the front steps and cries, saying it's all her fault. Tulio tries to comfort her. "This is not your fault." "... You're right. (...) It's YOUR fault! With your little bird talk and your whole 'Save the species'!" Tulio doesn't understand how it happened since Sylvio is the best guard in the business... only to overhear that Sylvio was attacked by a little bird with a rag over his mouth, which he demonstrates the use of and passes out again. The cop sniffs the rag and collapses on top of him. Linda watches on, "We're doomed.")

Nee: ::winces::
(Elsewhere Blu and Jewel are in a cage covered in a cloth and Blu is trying to calm himself. "How I wish I was back in my own cage with my mirror and my swing and my little bell. Ohh, how I miss my little bell!" Jewel orders Blu to play dead, which he does after overacting his death scene. "Stop twitching!" "Come on, it's the twitching that sells it." We find that a young boy named Fernando is responsible for their abduction and he is delivering the birds to a man named Marcel. He pays the boy half of what was promised, to Fernando's disappointment, before he uncovers the cage to find the "dead" birds. Marcel takes Jewel out of the cage and tells Fernando he needed them alive. Jewel suddenly bites Marcel on the thumb, causing him to lose his grip. Jewel flies around the room and then towards an opening in the wall, only to be tackled and pinned by Nigel. "Hello... pretty bird." On Marcel's order Nigel throws Jewel back into the cage with Blu. Blu sarcastically thanks her for leaving him behind, but Jewel expected him to fly after her. He hesitates to admit the truth as they are chained together at the foot.)
Nee: <Cam> My little bell
Katney: Heehee
Katney: The twitching sells it
Nee: ::twitches::
(Marcel orders Fernando to hang their cage in the next room which is full of caged birds, and at least one bat. "Sorry, guys. Nothing personal," Fernando tells Blu and Jewel before he leaves. He asks Marcel what will become of them, the latter promises they'll find good homes for them. Marcel tells Fernando to go home to his mother, but we learn that Fernando doesn't have a family before the door is slammed in his face. Before he leaves Fernando overhears Marcel tell his men Armando and Tipa that whoever buys the last blue macaws can eat them for all he cares; they're going to be RICH! Fernando walks off with a frown to his makeshift house on a roof, finding one of Blu's feathers on him as he settles in.)
Katney: ... I don't see any newspapers
Nee: maybe I need to twitch harder
Katney: Hehehe
(Meanwhile Armando and Tipa watch a ball game on a small TV--I call it soccer, Nee calls it football X3--while Marcel talks on the phone with the blue macaw buyer. "Yes, you were very clear. Tomorrow or the deal is off." He tells Armando and Tipa to load the truck tonight and bring the birds to the airport in the morning. He also asks that one of them feed Nigel. After "losing" a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors Tipa fearfully holds out a chicken leg to Nigel who snatches it viciously from his hand and eats. Tipa looks at Nigel, disgusted. "Ugh, cannibal.")

Katney: I know right? <_<
(Jewel paces in the cage as Blu tries to remain calm. Nigel enters the room and stops by a cage of tiny blue birds, asking one of them to remove a chunk of chicken from his beak, snapping it shut when one tries. But the bird keeps all its parts. Nigel flies up to Blu and Jewel's cage. "I know I'm not a pretty birdie... but I used to be quite a looker. A star." He sings "Pretty Bird" which explains his backstory: he used to be the star of a TV show called Fly Hard until they got an attractive parakeet to take over his role. Now he's evil and ugly and he promises to make all the birds ugly, too, threatening Jewel in particular. He wishes them sweet nightmares as he flies out. Blu calls after him, "Not cool, man! Scary, but not cool!")

Katney: Yeeeeeeeeep
(In her frustration Jewel causes the cage to swing back and forth, hitting the metal bars on the windows. This grabs Nigel's attention, who attempts to get Armando and Tipa's attention. Blu opens the door to their cage--"It's just a standard flip side bolt."--and Jewel doesn't hesitate to fly out through the bars, though now Blu is forced to admit to Jewel as they plummet, "I CAN'T FLY!" They land in the street below and are forced to run, pursued by Armando, Tipa, and Nigel while others watch the ball game on TV. Blu imitates a dog's bark to scare a cat out of their path and onto the humans chasing them, they roll in a bucket under some people sitting on a couch causing them to do "The Wave," and as someone is about to make a goal the birds cause Nigel to crash into a power box, cutting power to the whole city, including the stadium where the game is played. "NO!!!" Nigel lives on, though he's lost Blu and Jewel.)

Nee: that was a lot tie into one electric thing
Katney: NO!! XD
(In the jungle nearby Jewel is forced to drag a jumpy Blu along with her, assuring him that most of what they see are harmless. ... Even though she DOES have to lie about a huge spider on his back. But Blu's watched Animal Planet and he knows all about the food chain! In that moment he watches as a firefly is eaten by a frog who is then grabbed by a snake. "AAH! You see?!" Jewel tells him that's why they stay in trees, but Blu prefers man-made things like a nearby bamboo pagoda. Jewel groans that she'll have to drag him up there, but since Blu is an expert climber HE drags HER to the top of the structure, much to their amusements. "Y'see? Who needs flying?" "Birds need flying. Flying is... it's freedom and not having to rely on anyone. Don't you want that?" "I don't know. It sounds a little lonely." Jewel settles down to sleep, though Blu stays up since he's still on Minnesota time.)

Katney: Food chain in 5 seconds
Nee: <Cam> I can't fly!
Nee: <Sky> Just force out your wings!
Nee: <Cam> Not all of us are angels!
Katney: <Sky> Mrr
(Power is restored to the city as Tulio carries a tall stack of "Missing" posters containing Blu and Linda's picture and follows Linda as she asks people if they have seen Blu. By the next morning the posters are hung on nearly every post, tree, and surface. Fernando arrives at the Conservation Center where Linda and Tulio are asleep on the front steps covered in posters. Linda is sunburnt and has a tan line over her face from a flier as Fernando wakes them up. He tells them he knows where the birds are, producing Blu's feather as proof. Tulio isn't sure they should trust the boy, but Linda knows they have no choice. Meanwhile Armando and Tipa try to pass off two chickens painted blue as the macaws to Marcel, who is not fooled. He needs the birds at the airport tonight, but it will be tougher to travel the roads thanks to the Carnaval parade. He sends Nigel out to search for the birds. Marcel then gets an idea of how to get through the Carnaval parade.)
Katney: They'll never miss the sign XD
Katney: She got sunburnt
Nee: LOL!
Nee: they'll never know
Katney: And she'll be fine in the next scene XD
(Meanwhile Blu and Jewel try to lift a rock to break their chain, but it fails when they get caught in the pulley system. Blu hears a noise, alarmed... but it's only a pair of young toucans who fly up to them. "Be careful, Blu! They might schnuggle you to death!" Jewel teases as she cuddles one. Blu cuddles the other, until it tears feathers from his breast. A third arrives and climbs onto Jewel's head and chaos ensues. "ATTACK!" A squadron of baby toucans swoop down towards the helpless macaws until their father Rafael, voiced by George Lopez, intervenes. "17 [kids] and one on the way. (...) They're giving me gray feathers!")
Nee: two tucans!
Katney: They'll snuggle you to death and rip your featehrs~
Nee: ATTACK!

(Jewel asks if Rafael can help them get the chain off and he replies that he knows someone. His wife Eva arrives, and Rafael explains that he needs to take the macaws to see someone named Luiz. "You don't fool me for a second. You and your amigo just want to sneak off to Carnaval." Rafael recounts that he met Eva at Carnaval and sings "The Girl From Ipanema" which was the song playing when he first saw her. This softens Eva, who loudly sings a bit... badly off-key. >.O Rafael is lovestruck... Jewel says it best, "I guess love is deaf, too." After a kiss from her husband Eva permits them to go. As they go Rafael learns that they must walk and considers backing out, but once he sees Eva being attacked by the kids he decides to keep going.)

(Elsewhere a marmoset monkey entertains humans while other marmosets steal from them, including jewelry, sunglasses, cameras, and a cell phone. In the jungle they dance with the trinkets they've stolen. Nigel lands before them and asks that they help him find Blu and Jewel. "What's in it for us?" Nigel grabs that marmoset, flies him high into the air, and drops him, "discussing" what he should do for the marmoset as he falls. "SAVE ME! SAVE ME!" "Well, that's a thought, yeah, but is it enough? I don't want to feel like I'm cheating you." "We'll do it, we'll do it! Save me, please!" The marmoset is saved at the very last moment by Nigel. "Alright, you've twisted my wing. Deal.")

Katney: Indeed. <_<
(Blu, Jewel, and Rafael watch as a person hang glides. Blu wants to find a bus, but Rafael assures him that flying is in his blood. He instructs Blu and Jewel to put their wings around each other and each flap a wing. Blu doesn't think it sounds possible, but Rafael tells him he thinks too much. "Flying is not what you think up [in your head]; it's what you feel in [your heart]. And when you feel the rhythm of your heart, it's like samba! You fly!" Blu still has his doubts, but Jewel reminds him it's the only way to see Linda again. Jewel charges to begin, but Blu hesitates once again and they tumble over the side, but they land safely on a hang glider. Blu soon becomes inspired as he experiences what it must be like to fly. He slowly opens his wings but isn't prepared when the wind catches his wings, which pulls him and Jewel off the glider and back towards the ground. Through some hijinks they manage to land on the beach... relatively safe. X3 Rafael shakes his head disappointingly. "You did not feel it in [your heart]." They hurry and climb into a trunk full of melons before it drives off.)
Katney: Hang gliding!
Nee: Ya think
Katney: Tsk tsk
(The truck drives past Tulio's Jeep carrying Linda and Fernando, who notice the streets are being closed down for Carnaval. Fernando trades Tulio's Jeep for a motorcycle to better navigate through the crowd and alleys. He made the trade offscreen and without Tulio's consent.)
Katney: Just missed 'em
(The macaws and Rafael arrive at a busy market where they meet Nico and Pedro again, who seem proud of Blu after their "love lesson" by the looks of Jewel. Rafael asks if they have seen Luiz, Pedro answers that he took the trolley back to his garage. "It's time to take it to the next level!" Pedro proclaims. "What's wrong with this level?" Blu asks. "Come on! This ain't the level. The next level's the level. You got to shake your tail feathers." So the macaws are forced to go along with the party birds, unaware that a marmoset has spotted them.)
Nee: ... .... these two annoy me XDD
Katney: Nico and Pedro? They're sticking around for a bit
(They arrive at a Carnival party for birds who are dancing among the colorful lights and music. Nico and Pedro sing "Hot Wings (I Wanna Party)" to show Blu and Jewel a good time, since they don't get out much. Blu can't help but dance and dances with Jewel. She soon hovers in mid air and vocalizes, and Blu becomes mesmerized. They look as if they're about to lean towards each other, but the roof is torn off, letting in regular sunshine and marmosets.)
Katney: Dance club
Katney: Gotta admit, it's a pretty good song though
Nee: she has a nice voice
Katney: I've yet to watch her really do I Dreamed A Dream
(The lead marmoset orders Blu and Jewel to come with them, but the gathered birds defend them. A fight ensues between the birds and marmosets, during which the lead marmoset gets the macaws' chain between his legs and spits out a pair of actual jewels. A roseate spoonbill bird flies Blu and Jewel up to the arriving trolley, but they're held onto by a literal chain of monkeys. They lose their grip and the macaws board the trolley with Rafael, Nico, and Pedro. "You guys were like fire and ice!" "Thunder and lightning!" "Hip and hop!" "Cheese and sprinkles! ... It's a Minnesota thing." Does anyone know what that means? ... No one? OK.)

(Meanwhile Fernando arrives at Marcel's hideout with Linda and Tulio, but they find all the birds gone. Fernando admits that he's the one who took the birds because he needed money. They hear a noise, the two adults hide as Fernando is confronted by Armando and Tipa wearing feathered shirts and underwear. Fernando claims to be there looking for more work, learning that they already loaded the birds up. Fernando gets them to reveal that they've made a parade float to transport the birds to the airport, repeating the information so that Linda and Tulio can hear and gets them to take him along. Linda and Tulio follow them. Nigel arrives at the crashed party and learns from a lone bird where Blu and Jewel are heading. On the trolley Rafael tries to encourage Blu to put some moves on Jewel, but he's not very good at it. Rafael, Nico, and Pedro set the mood with romantic music, falling flower petals, and sing "Fly Love." Rafael then tells Blu to tell Jewel how he feels and when he tries Blu chokes on a flower petal. Jewel does the Heimlich Maneuver on him, Nico stops singing as he watches the scene with Pedro and Rafael, disappointed.)

(After the sun sets the birds arrive at Luiz's garage. Rafael calls out for Luiz when suddenly a drooling bulldog jumps out, barking as he chases the birds and then pin down the two macaws. A string of drool nearly touches Blu's face. However the dog laughs, "I got you gooooood! (...) I could've ripped your throats out, but I didn't. But I could've." This is Luiz. Rafael points out the chain connecting Blu and Jewel and Luiz leads them to a circular table saw. Luiz puts on a welding mask and pushes the birds towards the saw, but he slips on his own drool and sends the birds forward. Jewel flies up and pulls Blu with her, shaving a sliver of his crest. They swing around on the light above, causing Luiz to lose his welding helmet to the spinning blade and then fly into him with their chain in his mouth and leaves them hanging off it. Luiz drools over the chain which is enough to free Blu and Jewel from the manacles. Slimy and probably contaminated, but free!)

(Jewel doesn't waste a single moment to celebrate her freedom by whooping and FLYING! Rafael, Nico, and Pedro join her as Blu watches them sadly. Jewel stops celebrating long enough to notice Blu walking away and drops down to him, asking what's wrong. He pretends to be happy that they'll be going back to their respected homes as they planned. Jewel begins to say she thought Blu would come with her, but Blu admits that he can't spend his life following her around on foot. "Hey, it's not my fault you can't fly." >_> Ooooo.)

Katney: Ouch
(Rafael encourages them to stay honest, and Blu goes on to say he doesn't belong there and that he didn't even want to come... and that he HATES SAMBA!!! The birds gasp! Nico takes it especially hard. Jewel frowns, hiding her breaking heart, "Fine! See you around, pet!" She flies away as Blu walks off. Nico and Pedro to go after Jewel while Rafael goes after Blu. The two witness Jewel fighting midair with Nigel until he gets a hold of her. "We're going to a parade... EVERYBODY loves a parade." In the meantime Blu tells Rafael to stop following him; Carnaval is the other way. Rafael replies that he's actually going home, telling Blu that while he loves Carnaval he loves his family much more. It's a decision he made with his heart, not his head. Nico and Pedro return and tell Blu that Jewel was taken to the parade by Nigel. Blu rides in Luiz's Carnaval fruit hat as they race to the parade with the others.)

(Marcel waits for Armando and Tipa to arrive with their float, which is a shabby mess of cloth over their truck which looks like a chicken. It plays "The Chicken Dance", Tipa and Armando dressed as chickens and Fernando an egg. Marcel shakes his head at their idiocy.)

(Linda and Tulio make their way to the main arena, but they realize they won't be able to get through without looking like performers. Fortunately they find a truck nearby with costumes. Blue macaw costumes. With headdresses that look just like Blu and Jewel. ... Couldn't the animators have colored them green or something? Tulio stares in awe at Linda wearing the female version of the costume which is basically a sparkling bikini with wings on her back and tail feathers. "Say You, Say Me" plays in his head. They both become drawn together... until they bump beaks from their headdresses. They realize the parade is about to start. Birds now, Lionel Richie later. ^^)
Katney: ... I question how they find those costumes that look exactly like their birds

(The two split up to search for Blu among the floats, but Linda is forced into a float and Tulio is caught up in a sea of marching performers. Linda is on a rising platform and finds herself at the very top of a large float in front of a crowd of tens of thousands. "Cheese and sprinkles!" Elsewhere in the parade Marcel drives the pathetic parade float which is getting ridiculed. Inside the float Jewel sits sadly in a locked cage while Nigel muses that Blu will come for her soon.)

(Luiz and the birds arrive and search for Jewel. Meanwhile Linda is being yelled at in Portuguese as she crouches on the float. Tulio finally finds her and tells her she has to "shake [her] tushy!" "NO! We don't shake our tushies in Minnesota!" However, once she sees Blu riding on the back of Luiz she stumbles down in a way that passes for dancing. Blu hears Linda calling out to him, but Rafael announces they have found Jewel. Torn for a moment, Blu instructs Luiz to go after Jewel. Linda goes after Blu, falling off the float and into Tulio's arms. Luiz abandons the chase when he is smacked in the face by a performer dressed like an alligator, but Blu uses a skateboard that the performer was using to catch up to Marcel's float and gets inside.)

(Blu starts to pick the lock on Jewel's cage, only to be knocked into another cage by Nigel. Rafael, Nico, and Pedro are also in a cage. Toast it, guys, you had one job! Nigel signals to Marcel that they have both blue macaws by showing him Blu's feathers. Marcel drives his way out of the parade just as Linda and Tulio catch up to the float. Fernando leaves a trail of cloth hanging off the float for them. Linda hijacks an abandoned float to follow after them.)

(At the airport Fernando helps to load the birds into the back of a plane. He eyes Blu and Jewel and attempts to free them, but Nigel stops him from getting any closer. Marcel starts to drag Fernando away, but the boy takes an idea he learned from Jewel: he BITES MARCEL'S HAND and runs away! Linda and Tulio approach the airport, crashing through the gate in the float when they see the plane about to take off. They fly straight towards it, but the plane pulls up and into the air, ripping the top of the float. Linda cries into Tulio's shoulder as the plane flies into the distance.)
Nee: LOL how did he get there?
Katney: Who knows? XD
Katney: Property damage... oy
Nee: they'll need to pay for that
(The birds sit quietly in the plane, even Rafael can't be positive. Blu lowers a bungee cord to a fire extinguisher and hooks the other end to the top of his cage, pushing the extinguisher off to the floor to pop the top of his cage open. The extinguisher springs a leak. Freed, Blu hurries to free the other caged birds (and the one bat). Blu opens the back hatch with a button, alerting the humans in the front. Fortunately for the birds the humans can't get out because the door is blocked with cages. Most of the birds fly out, except for Jewel and Blu, who is still afraid to fly. "It's OK. We'll figure this out together." Suddenly Nigel pins Blu down by the throat and throws Jewel aside. A cage is knocked down onto her wing, injuring it. "Now we have two useless, flightless birds." Blu reaches the leaking fire extinguisher and hooks the bungee cord onto Nigel's leg. "Not cool, man! Not cool!" He pulls the pin, sending the can and Nigel flying out of the front of the plane, and Nigel is in the path of the plane's propeller. All we see are several feathers flying out the back.)

(The plane begins to descend, Marcel jumps out with the only parachute, followed by Armando and Tipa. Jewel slides towards the edge of the tailgate and falls off before Blu can reach her. Blu swallows hard and dives off the plane after her. He plummets towards Jewel and grabs onto her. "Blu, you're crazy! What are you doing?!" "I'm not gonna let you go! We're chained-to-each-other birds, remember?" Jewel stares at him... and kisses him as they fall towards the ocean. Blu slowly opens his wings... and flies, just skimming the water, holding Jewel in his talons. "I'm flying! I'm really flying!" He flies them back towards Rio. Marcel wears the parachute as Armando and Tipa hang onto him by his legs, his pants at his ankles. "Idiots.")

(Linda, Tulio, and Fernando sit defeated at the airport, until they notice Blu flying towards them with Jewel. Blu lays Jewel on the ground as the humans approach and realize Jewel's injury. Tulio slowly reaches towards Jewel, who recoils until Blu quietly reassures her. "Don't worry, I'll take care of you." Some time later Jewel's wing is healed and she flies out of Tulio's hands from a platform in the jungle, Linda and Fernando standing beside him. A sign nearby reads "Blu Bird Sanctuary" and after a moment with Linda Blu flies off after Jewel. Tulio puts an arm around Linda's shoulder and Fernando joins them smiling after the two macaws. "The End" appears on screen. But first "Real in Rio" is sung again, joined by the main characters as their voice actors' credits appear beside them. Blu and Jewel are joined by three blue macaw chicks and fly towards the sunset with Linda, Tulio, Fernando, and even Luiz on hang gliders.)

(In the crashed remains of the plane a very bedraggled Nigel wakes up on the floor in the jungle. A marmoset takes his picture with a stolen camera, revealing he's lost most of his feathers. Credits roll, with pictures of Linda, Tulio, and Fernando on a bicycle built for three; Marcel, Armando, and Tipa in a jail cell; and the grand opening of Linda's book store in Rio among others. Film ends.)
Katney: AND HE'S STILL FREAKIN' ALIVE

Title Card: Our first Movie Date where the main protagonists aren't humanoid. XD Luckily this movie had costumes that looked EXACTLY like them. ... I still question that. Anyway, after seeing some of Nee's title cards from last year I decided I needed to put more effort into mine, or at least make them funnier. This scene from Rio was a good choice, but what would cause Katney to knock Nee flat on his back with a foot at his throat? Well, we did just watch 5 Marvel movies in quick succession... I needed more animation at that point. ^^ I think Nee did actually suggest Iron Man 3 as his next movie but I can't say I reacted the way I did in the title card. ... Although that memory IS awfully fuzzy. ... Oh, well! ^^ And yes, Big Hero 6 is the next Movie Date. It's Marvel, but it's animated, not in the MCU, and I actually wanted to see it. ^^

1) We watch these movies from our respective countries. We log into our internet messenger of choice, choose a movie, count down to start, and type our reactions and commentary accordingly.
2) It has to be a movie only one of us has seen before. The only exception is if it's part of a film series and one of us wishes to watch it together, but it will still be added to their movie total tally. (Example: Katney's already seen Batman Forever, but Nee wants it included in the Movie Date entries.)
3) If neither of us has seen a particular movie one of us has to watch it first. Besides syncing issues leading to possible spoilers who would draw the title card? X3
4) Movies that we've seen before but haven't watched in several years and remember very little of may be included.
5) Movies that have only been seen in bits and pieces may be included as long as certain plot points/twists haven't been revealed. There may be some minor exceptions if it's included in a film series and/or heavily parodied.
6) TV and internet shows will be included. One disk/season will be considered one movie. 5 to 6 episodes maximum per viewing and marked as a completed movie by the end of the disk/season. Internet shows without a physical copy will be calculated either by episode run times or by season.
7) While Katney does her best to add movie descriptions these logs are from some time ago and some of our reactions may have to be taken out of context.
8) The logs will be posted as they were originally written, except self-corrected typos will be removed and some strong language will be censored. The censored word will usually be replaced with "(toast)" or some other variation depending on the situation. There may be some films where this rule will be ignored.
9) In the descriptions the actor's name may only be listed in regards to the character they play if we refer to them as such or as another character they've played in our commentary.
10) Movies are watched from beginning to end, so if you intend to watch these movies beware of spoilers.

(The sun rises over Rio de Janeiro as the title appears on screen. We sweep back towards the tropical jungles where the local birds begin to dance and sing "Real in Rio." Their singing awakens a blue macaw hatchling, later named Blu, sleeping in a nest in a hollow tree. He watches the birds soaring and dancing, and watches a few other hatchlings learn to fly. He prepares to follow their example... until suddenly several of the birds are captured and caged while others escape. Baby Blu falls out of his nest in a panic and lands on the ground, looking around in frightened silence until he, too, is caged and loaded into a transport plane.)
Katney: What a view

(Elsewhere in a snowy environment the caption reads "(not Rio)", but we soon learn it's Moose Lake, Minnesota. Baby Blu is in a truck bearing the logo for exotic pets. The rear hatch is close to opening and does as the driver of the truck struggles to break before running a red light. One of the boxes falls out the back, the driver unaware. The box contains Baby Blu, all alone and frightened. The top of the box is opened and a young girl wearing glasses peers inside. This is Linda Gunderson. She reaches in and gently scoops up the baby bird, assuring him that it's alright. She gently strokes his head, "I'll take care of you." She snuggles him against her cheek when he feels safe.)

Nee: It would bite her in real life
Katney: Yeeeeeeeeeep
(Next we pan over a series of pictures and newspaper clippings where we see Linda and Blu growing up. They celebrate birthdays, win spelling bees, and go to prom. Yeesh. We finish on a recent picture of them 15 years older. Blu helps Linda wake up in the morning by imitating an alarm clock, and then a car alarm. Blu never learned to fly so he finds creative ways to get around, such as using rings on the ceilings, climbing, and rolling around on toy cars. He dances on Linda's computer keyboard to log into it and opens the curtains to the front window of their bookstore, Blue Macaw Books, and flips the sign from Closed to Open.)

(Later in the day Linda talks on the phone with her mother saying she can't visit because there's no one who can bird-sit. She sets a cup of hot cocoa and a plate of cookies on the counter by the front window for Blu. He delights in the perfect ratio of marshmallows to cocoa until Canadian geese throw snowballs at the window. They mock him for being a nerdy pet who can't migrate. They're soon chased off by a young man who stumbles around on the ice outside. He sees Blu through the window and hurries to get inside, but not before face planting into the glass. Once inside he tells Linda that he traveled 6,000 miles looking for Blu.)
Katney: He gets hot chocolate AND cookies
Nee: O.o waaaaaaaaaaant
Katney: Enter romantic interest
Nee: for Blu?
(The man is Tulio Monteiro, Doctor of Ornithology at the Conservation Center of Rio de Janeiro. Tulio is very passionate about his job, as he squawks at birds and mimics bird behavior to communicate with them, though he ends up freaking out Blu. Tulio tells Linda that Blu may be the last male blue macaw in the world, and he would like to arrange a trip for the pair to travel to Rio so that Blu can mate with the female they have. Blu gulps. X3 Linda is hesitant as she doesn't like traveling and admits that Blu can't even fly. Tulio tries to prove her wrong and tosses Blu across the room, expecting instinct to take over. Blu flaps his wings and quickly falls to the ground. "What kind of doctor are you?" Blu scoffs. Linda shows Tulio out, but he begs her to reconsider. "If we don't do this, his whole species will be gone! Just think about it.")
Katney: Blu doesn't approve
Nee: LOL
Katney: Heehee
(That night Blu studies a book about flying an airplane and draws notes to accommodate for birds. He lines a long table with Christmas tree lights to look like a airport runway. "Just keep it simple. Thrust, lift, drag, and weight." He runs down the table but hesitates at the last moment before he slips and falls off the table, tangled in the lights. Linda comes down the stairs and beholds the sight, and Blu gives a sheepish smile. Later Blu sits on Linda's knee. "... I promised I would always look out for you, didn't I? And have I ever broken a promise? I'm scared, too, but I wouldn't make you do this if it wasn't the right thing to do." Though they don't speak the same language they understand each other. Blu agrees to the blind date in Rio.)
Nee: ... and Pixar all just facepalms
Katney: Yeah, I don't know what the Newt plotline was beyond saving the species and such, but... yeah
Nee: it's exactly the same... down to the colour of the animals
Katney: Yeah, but the newt didn't wanna fly XD

(Blu and Linda arrive in Rio as "Let Me Fly To Rio" plays. The lyrics go, "Let me take you to Rio, Rio/Fly over the ocean like an eagle, eagle/Then we can chill in my gazebo, gazebo." They drive with Tulio in his Jeep, Blu in the back in a birdcage. Linda applies some sun lotion to her face, then applies a streak to Blu's beak. They stop as people pass in front of them, some dressed for Carnaval tomorrow night. Linda reacts to a woman wearing a feathered headdress and a sequined swimsuit. "Is she a performer?" Linda asks. "No, in fact, she's my dentist!" Tulio replies.)

(A yellow canary named Nico and a large red-crested cardinal named Pedro land on Blu's cage and greet him in Portuguese. The birds then speak in English when they realize Blu is a tourist. Blu admits that he's there to meet a girl and they advise him to make the first move and give him a few tips. The Jeep drives on and the two birds fly away.)
Katney: Lucky birds are bilingual XD
(Blu, Linda, and Tulio arrive at the Conservation Center and enter the treatment room. As he enters Tulio is almost instantly covered in birds, a few of them are small and round. "I'm their great, big mama bird," Tulio explains, pouring bird seed into his mouth and allowing one of the birds to feed. Eeeeeewwww. Moving along they pass by various injured birds, many rescued from smugglers. He shows them a shivering and sickly looking sulphur-crested cockatoo that they brought in the night before. Blu wishes the cockatoo to get well soon, and the cockatoo glares at him.)

(The female blue macaw is "spirited" so she is kept in a private enclosure where Blu is forced into. Linda and Tulio watch the progress on a monitor. As Blu wonders through the enclosure he notices Jewel, voiced by Anne Hathaway, flying in slow motion in front of a light, appearing elegant and angelic. Blu is awestruck. "What were they talking about? She's like an angel. ... An angel who's getting really close--" Jewel tackles Blu and pins him to the ground, her talons at his throat, and questions him in Portuguese. Blu chokes, "You're standing on my throat." She lets him up and speaks in English when she realizes he is American and the same species. She quickly pulls Blu away and leads him up a tree, which he climbs using pegs in the trunk.)

Katney: Enter the Jewel
(Blu believes Jewel is hurrying them along to mate and moves in to kiss her, but she pushes him off, telling him she's actually trying to escape through a nearby ventilation shaft. She becomes angered when she realizes what he was planning. "We just met!" Tulio decides they need some help so he dims the lights and lowers a disco ball beside Blu, playing "Say You, Say Me" by Lionel Richie. Jewel tackles Blu to the ground and they briefly end up in a romantic looking pose. Linda blinks at how fast that was. Tulio suggests they give the birds some privacy and steps out with her. Linda expresses her hesitation but Tulio assures her that their best guard Sylvio will be watching. Jewel continues to attack Blu.)
Katney: ... Does the guy know anything about setting the mood for birds?
(Later Sylvio dances to samba music on the radio, tearing off his shirt and pants to reveal a gold undershirt and matching briefs. He stops dancing when he hears metal clattering. He enters the treatment room and finds the cockatoo on the floor. Sylvio scoops the shivering bird up... when suddenly the cockatoo shoves a cloth over Sylvio's mouth and knocks him out. Everyone, meet Nigel. Nigel takes Sylvio's ring of keys and unlocks another door where a human shadow approaches. Meanwhile Blu is awakened by Jewel pounding the grate over the ventilation shaft with a rock and complains. Jewel retorts that she's trying to escape, even though Blu thinks her cage is awesome. "You would rather be with a human than with your own kind?!" "Well that human has given me love and affection for the past 15 years whereas my own kind try to strangle me after 15 seconds!" Jewel retorts that she lost everything because of humans and can't trust them. The door suddenly opens and in a matter of moments both birds are in a burlap bag.)

Katney: Bird had cholorfoam!
(Meanwhile Linda and Tulio sit outside a restaurant having dinner. They discuss their favorite birds, Linda's is the blue macaw and Tulio's is the spotted owl. "I've always been mesmerized by those big... round... intelligent eyes," Tulio finds himself staring into Linda's eyes. Suddenly a waiter arrives and loudly laughs, carving picanha at their table. A second waiter serves chicken hearts flambe style. Before they can eat Tulio's cell phone rings. He answers and his face falls in worry. At the center a police car sits outside. Linda collapses at the front steps and cries, saying it's all her fault. Tulio tries to comfort her. "This is not your fault." "... You're right. (...) It's YOUR fault! With your little bird talk and your whole 'Save the species'!" Tulio doesn't understand how it happened since Sylvio is the best guard in the business... only to overhear that Sylvio was attacked by a little bird with a rag over his mouth, which he demonstrates the use of and passes out again. The cop sniffs the rag and collapses on top of him. Linda watches on, "We're doomed.")

(Elsewhere Blu and Jewel are in a cage covered in a cloth and Blu is trying to calm himself. "How I wish I was back in my own cage with my mirror and my swing and my little bell. Ohh, how I miss my little bell!" Jewel orders Blu to play dead, which he does after overacting his death scene. "Stop twitching!" "Come on, it's the twitching that sells it." We find that a young boy named Fernando is responsible for their abduction and he is delivering the birds to a man named Marcel. He pays the boy half of what was promised, to Fernando's disappointment, before he uncovers the cage to find the "dead" birds. Marcel takes Jewel out of the cage and tells Fernando he needed them alive. Jewel suddenly bites Marcel on the thumb, causing him to lose his grip. Jewel flies around the room and then towards an opening in the wall, only to be tackled and pinned by Nigel. "Hello... pretty bird." On Marcel's order Nigel throws Jewel back into the cage with Blu. Blu sarcastically thanks her for leaving him behind, but Jewel expected him to fly after her. He hesitates to admit the truth as they are chained together at the foot.)

(Marcel orders Fernando to hang their cage in the next room which is full of caged birds, and at least one bat. "Sorry, guys. Nothing personal," Fernando tells Blu and Jewel before he leaves. He asks Marcel what will become of them, the latter promises they'll find good homes for them. Marcel tells Fernando to go home to his mother, but we learn that Fernando doesn't have a family before the door is slammed in his face. Before he leaves Fernando overhears Marcel tell his men Armando and Tipa that whoever buys the last blue macaws can eat them for all he cares; they're going to be RICH! Fernando walks off with a frown to his makeshift house on a roof, finding one of Blu's feathers on him as he settles in.)
Katney: ... I don't see any newspapers
Nee: maybe I need to twitch harder
Katney: Hehehe
(Meanwhile Armando and Tipa watch a ball game on a small TV--I call it soccer, Nee calls it football X3--while Marcel talks on the phone with the blue macaw buyer. "Yes, you were very clear. Tomorrow or the deal is off." He tells Armando and Tipa to load the truck tonight and bring the birds to the airport in the morning. He also asks that one of them feed Nigel. After "losing" a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors Tipa fearfully holds out a chicken leg to Nigel who snatches it viciously from his hand and eats. Tipa looks at Nigel, disgusted. "Ugh, cannibal.")

(Jewel paces in the cage as Blu tries to remain calm. Nigel enters the room and stops by a cage of tiny blue birds, asking one of them to remove a chunk of chicken from his beak, snapping it shut when one tries. But the bird keeps all its parts. Nigel flies up to Blu and Jewel's cage. "I know I'm not a pretty birdie... but I used to be quite a looker. A star." He sings "Pretty Bird" which explains his backstory: he used to be the star of a TV show called Fly Hard until they got an attractive parakeet to take over his role. Now he's evil and ugly and he promises to make all the birds ugly, too, threatening Jewel in particular. He wishes them sweet nightmares as he flies out. Blu calls after him, "Not cool, man! Scary, but not cool!")

(In her frustration Jewel causes the cage to swing back and forth, hitting the metal bars on the windows. This grabs Nigel's attention, who attempts to get Armando and Tipa's attention. Blu opens the door to their cage--"It's just a standard flip side bolt."--and Jewel doesn't hesitate to fly out through the bars, though now Blu is forced to admit to Jewel as they plummet, "I CAN'T FLY!" They land in the street below and are forced to run, pursued by Armando, Tipa, and Nigel while others watch the ball game on TV. Blu imitates a dog's bark to scare a cat out of their path and onto the humans chasing them, they roll in a bucket under some people sitting on a couch causing them to do "The Wave," and as someone is about to make a goal the birds cause Nigel to crash into a power box, cutting power to the whole city, including the stadium where the game is played. "NO!!!" Nigel lives on, though he's lost Blu and Jewel.)

Katney: NO!! XD
(In the jungle nearby Jewel is forced to drag a jumpy Blu along with her, assuring him that most of what they see are harmless. ... Even though she DOES have to lie about a huge spider on his back. But Blu's watched Animal Planet and he knows all about the food chain! In that moment he watches as a firefly is eaten by a frog who is then grabbed by a snake. "AAH! You see?!" Jewel tells him that's why they stay in trees, but Blu prefers man-made things like a nearby bamboo pagoda. Jewel groans that she'll have to drag him up there, but since Blu is an expert climber HE drags HER to the top of the structure, much to their amusements. "Y'see? Who needs flying?" "Birds need flying. Flying is... it's freedom and not having to rely on anyone. Don't you want that?" "I don't know. It sounds a little lonely." Jewel settles down to sleep, though Blu stays up since he's still on Minnesota time.)

(Power is restored to the city as Tulio carries a tall stack of "Missing" posters containing Blu and Linda's picture and follows Linda as she asks people if they have seen Blu. By the next morning the posters are hung on nearly every post, tree, and surface. Fernando arrives at the Conservation Center where Linda and Tulio are asleep on the front steps covered in posters. Linda is sunburnt and has a tan line over her face from a flier as Fernando wakes them up. He tells them he knows where the birds are, producing Blu's feather as proof. Tulio isn't sure they should trust the boy, but Linda knows they have no choice. Meanwhile Armando and Tipa try to pass off two chickens painted blue as the macaws to Marcel, who is not fooled. He needs the birds at the airport tonight, but it will be tougher to travel the roads thanks to the Carnaval parade. He sends Nigel out to search for the birds. Marcel then gets an idea of how to get through the Carnaval parade.)
Katney: They'll never miss the sign XD
Katney: She got sunburnt
Nee: LOL!

Katney: And she'll be fine in the next scene XD
(Meanwhile Blu and Jewel try to lift a rock to break their chain, but it fails when they get caught in the pulley system. Blu hears a noise, alarmed... but it's only a pair of young toucans who fly up to them. "Be careful, Blu! They might schnuggle you to death!" Jewel teases as she cuddles one. Blu cuddles the other, until it tears feathers from his breast. A third arrives and climbs onto Jewel's head and chaos ensues. "ATTACK!" A squadron of baby toucans swoop down towards the helpless macaws until their father Rafael, voiced by George Lopez, intervenes. "17 [kids] and one on the way. (...) They're giving me gray feathers!")
Nee: two tucans!
Katney: They'll snuggle you to death and rip your featehrs~

(Jewel asks if Rafael can help them get the chain off and he replies that he knows someone. His wife Eva arrives, and Rafael explains that he needs to take the macaws to see someone named Luiz. "You don't fool me for a second. You and your amigo just want to sneak off to Carnaval." Rafael recounts that he met Eva at Carnaval and sings "The Girl From Ipanema" which was the song playing when he first saw her. This softens Eva, who loudly sings a bit... badly off-key. >.O Rafael is lovestruck... Jewel says it best, "I guess love is deaf, too." After a kiss from her husband Eva permits them to go. As they go Rafael learns that they must walk and considers backing out, but once he sees Eva being attacked by the kids he decides to keep going.)

(Elsewhere a marmoset monkey entertains humans while other marmosets steal from them, including jewelry, sunglasses, cameras, and a cell phone. In the jungle they dance with the trinkets they've stolen. Nigel lands before them and asks that they help him find Blu and Jewel. "What's in it for us?" Nigel grabs that marmoset, flies him high into the air, and drops him, "discussing" what he should do for the marmoset as he falls. "SAVE ME! SAVE ME!" "Well, that's a thought, yeah, but is it enough? I don't want to feel like I'm cheating you." "We'll do it, we'll do it! Save me, please!" The marmoset is saved at the very last moment by Nigel. "Alright, you've twisted my wing. Deal.")

(Blu, Jewel, and Rafael watch as a person hang glides. Blu wants to find a bus, but Rafael assures him that flying is in his blood. He instructs Blu and Jewel to put their wings around each other and each flap a wing. Blu doesn't think it sounds possible, but Rafael tells him he thinks too much. "Flying is not what you think up [in your head]; it's what you feel in [your heart]. And when you feel the rhythm of your heart, it's like samba! You fly!" Blu still has his doubts, but Jewel reminds him it's the only way to see Linda again. Jewel charges to begin, but Blu hesitates once again and they tumble over the side, but they land safely on a hang glider. Blu soon becomes inspired as he experiences what it must be like to fly. He slowly opens his wings but isn't prepared when the wind catches his wings, which pulls him and Jewel off the glider and back towards the ground. Through some hijinks they manage to land on the beach... relatively safe. X3 Rafael shakes his head disappointingly. "You did not feel it in [your heart]." They hurry and climb into a trunk full of melons before it drives off.)
Katney: Hang gliding!

Katney: Tsk tsk
(The truck drives past Tulio's Jeep carrying Linda and Fernando, who notice the streets are being closed down for Carnaval. Fernando trades Tulio's Jeep for a motorcycle to better navigate through the crowd and alleys. He made the trade offscreen and without Tulio's consent.)
Katney: Just missed 'em
(The macaws and Rafael arrive at a busy market where they meet Nico and Pedro again, who seem proud of Blu after their "love lesson" by the looks of Jewel. Rafael asks if they have seen Luiz, Pedro answers that he took the trolley back to his garage. "It's time to take it to the next level!" Pedro proclaims. "What's wrong with this level?" Blu asks. "Come on! This ain't the level. The next level's the level. You got to shake your tail feathers." So the macaws are forced to go along with the party birds, unaware that a marmoset has spotted them.)
Nee: ... .... these two annoy me XDD
Katney: Nico and Pedro? They're sticking around for a bit
(They arrive at a Carnival party for birds who are dancing among the colorful lights and music. Nico and Pedro sing "Hot Wings (I Wanna Party)" to show Blu and Jewel a good time, since they don't get out much. Blu can't help but dance and dances with Jewel. She soon hovers in mid air and vocalizes, and Blu becomes mesmerized. They look as if they're about to lean towards each other, but the roof is torn off, letting in regular sunshine and marmosets.)
Katney: Dance club
Katney: Gotta admit, it's a pretty good song though
Nee: she has a nice voice
Katney: I've yet to watch her really do I Dreamed A Dream
(The lead marmoset orders Blu and Jewel to come with them, but the gathered birds defend them. A fight ensues between the birds and marmosets, during which the lead marmoset gets the macaws' chain between his legs and spits out a pair of actual jewels. A roseate spoonbill bird flies Blu and Jewel up to the arriving trolley, but they're held onto by a literal chain of monkeys. They lose their grip and the macaws board the trolley with Rafael, Nico, and Pedro. "You guys were like fire and ice!" "Thunder and lightning!" "Hip and hop!" "Cheese and sprinkles! ... It's a Minnesota thing." Does anyone know what that means? ... No one? OK.)

(Meanwhile Fernando arrives at Marcel's hideout with Linda and Tulio, but they find all the birds gone. Fernando admits that he's the one who took the birds because he needed money. They hear a noise, the two adults hide as Fernando is confronted by Armando and Tipa wearing feathered shirts and underwear. Fernando claims to be there looking for more work, learning that they already loaded the birds up. Fernando gets them to reveal that they've made a parade float to transport the birds to the airport, repeating the information so that Linda and Tulio can hear and gets them to take him along. Linda and Tulio follow them. Nigel arrives at the crashed party and learns from a lone bird where Blu and Jewel are heading. On the trolley Rafael tries to encourage Blu to put some moves on Jewel, but he's not very good at it. Rafael, Nico, and Pedro set the mood with romantic music, falling flower petals, and sing "Fly Love." Rafael then tells Blu to tell Jewel how he feels and when he tries Blu chokes on a flower petal. Jewel does the Heimlich Maneuver on him, Nico stops singing as he watches the scene with Pedro and Rafael, disappointed.)
Katney: ... He should've been singing Kiss the Girl XD

(After the sun sets the birds arrive at Luiz's garage. Rafael calls out for Luiz when suddenly a drooling bulldog jumps out, barking as he chases the birds and then pin down the two macaws. A string of drool nearly touches Blu's face. However the dog laughs, "I got you gooooood! (...) I could've ripped your throats out, but I didn't. But I could've." This is Luiz. Rafael points out the chain connecting Blu and Jewel and Luiz leads them to a circular table saw. Luiz puts on a welding mask and pushes the birds towards the saw, but he slips on his own drool and sends the birds forward. Jewel flies up and pulls Blu with her, shaving a sliver of his crest. They swing around on the light above, causing Luiz to lose his welding helmet to the spinning blade and then fly into him with their chain in his mouth and leaves them hanging off it. Luiz drools over the chain which is enough to free Blu and Jewel from the manacles. Slimy and probably contaminated, but free!)
Katney: MAD DOG

(Jewel doesn't waste a single moment to celebrate her freedom by whooping and FLYING! Rafael, Nico, and Pedro join her as Blu watches them sadly. Jewel stops celebrating long enough to notice Blu walking away and drops down to him, asking what's wrong. He pretends to be happy that they'll be going back to their respected homes as they planned. Jewel begins to say she thought Blu would come with her, but Blu admits that he can't spend his life following her around on foot. "Hey, it's not my fault you can't fly." >_> Ooooo.)
Nee: FLYING!!
Katney: Freedom
Katney: Ouch
(Rafael encourages them to stay honest, and Blu goes on to say he doesn't belong there and that he didn't even want to come... and that he HATES SAMBA!!! The birds gasp! Nico takes it especially hard. Jewel frowns, hiding her breaking heart, "Fine! See you around, pet!" She flies away as Blu walks off. Nico and Pedro to go after Jewel while Rafael goes after Blu. The two witness Jewel fighting midair with Nigel until he gets a hold of her. "We're going to a parade... EVERYBODY loves a parade." In the meantime Blu tells Rafael to stop following him; Carnaval is the other way. Rafael replies that he's actually going home, telling Blu that while he loves Carnaval he loves his family much more. It's a decision he made with his heart, not his head. Nico and Pedro return and tell Blu that Jewel was taken to the parade by Nigel. Blu rides in Luiz's Carnaval fruit hat as they race to the parade with the others.)
Nee: GASP!
Katney: Bird fight
(Marcel waits for Armando and Tipa to arrive with their float, which is a shabby mess of cloth over their truck which looks like a chicken. It plays "The Chicken Dance", Tipa and Armando dressed as chickens and Fernando an egg. Marcel shakes his head at their idiocy.)
Katney: ::does the Chicken Dance::

(Linda and Tulio make their way to the main arena, but they realize they won't be able to get through without looking like performers. Fortunately they find a truck nearby with costumes. Blue macaw costumes. With headdresses that look just like Blu and Jewel. ... Couldn't the animators have colored them green or something? Tulio stares in awe at Linda wearing the female version of the costume which is basically a sparkling bikini with wings on her back and tail feathers. "Say You, Say Me" plays in his head. They both become drawn together... until they bump beaks from their headdresses. They realize the parade is about to start. Birds now, Lionel Richie later. ^^)
Katney: ... I question how they find those costumes that look exactly like their birds
Nee: ¬¬ I am sure they had tons of times to have those made their size

(The two split up to search for Blu among the floats, but Linda is forced into a float and Tulio is caught up in a sea of marching performers. Linda is on a rising platform and finds herself at the very top of a large float in front of a crowd of tens of thousands. "Cheese and sprinkles!" Elsewhere in the parade Marcel drives the pathetic parade float which is getting ridiculed. Inside the float Jewel sits sadly in a locked cage while Nigel muses that Blu will come for her soon.)

(Luiz and the birds arrive and search for Jewel. Meanwhile Linda is being yelled at in Portuguese as she crouches on the float. Tulio finally finds her and tells her she has to "shake [her] tushy!" "NO! We don't shake our tushies in Minnesota!" However, once she sees Blu riding on the back of Luiz she stumbles down in a way that passes for dancing. Blu hears Linda calling out to him, but Rafael announces they have found Jewel. Torn for a moment, Blu instructs Luiz to go after Jewel. Linda goes after Blu, falling off the float and into Tulio's arms. Luiz abandons the chase when he is smacked in the face by a performer dressed like an alligator, but Blu uses a skateboard that the performer was using to catch up to Marcel's float and gets inside.)

(Blu starts to pick the lock on Jewel's cage, only to be knocked into another cage by Nigel. Rafael, Nico, and Pedro are also in a cage. Toast it, guys, you had one job! Nigel signals to Marcel that they have both blue macaws by showing him Blu's feathers. Marcel drives his way out of the parade just as Linda and Tulio catch up to the float. Fernando leaves a trail of cloth hanging off the float for them. Linda hijacks an abandoned float to follow after them.)
Nee: smart kid
(At the airport Fernando helps to load the birds into the back of a plane. He eyes Blu and Jewel and attempts to free them, but Nigel stops him from getting any closer. Marcel starts to drag Fernando away, but the boy takes an idea he learned from Jewel: he BITES MARCEL'S HAND and runs away! Linda and Tulio approach the airport, crashing through the gate in the float when they see the plane about to take off. They fly straight towards it, but the plane pulls up and into the air, ripping the top of the float. Linda cries into Tulio's shoulder as the plane flies into the distance.)
Nee: LOL how did he get there?
Katney: Who knows? XD
Katney: Property damage... oy
Nee: they'll need to pay for that
(The birds sit quietly in the plane, even Rafael can't be positive. Blu lowers a bungee cord to a fire extinguisher and hooks the other end to the top of his cage, pushing the extinguisher off to the floor to pop the top of his cage open. The extinguisher springs a leak. Freed, Blu hurries to free the other caged birds (and the one bat). Blu opens the back hatch with a button, alerting the humans in the front. Fortunately for the birds the humans can't get out because the door is blocked with cages. Most of the birds fly out, except for Jewel and Blu, who is still afraid to fly. "It's OK. We'll figure this out together." Suddenly Nigel pins Blu down by the throat and throws Jewel aside. A cage is knocked down onto her wing, injuring it. "Now we have two useless, flightless birds." Blu reaches the leaking fire extinguisher and hooks the bungee cord onto Nigel's leg. "Not cool, man! Not cool!" He pulls the pin, sending the can and Nigel flying out of the front of the plane, and Nigel is in the path of the plane's propeller. All we see are several feathers flying out the back.)

(The plane begins to descend, Marcel jumps out with the only parachute, followed by Armando and Tipa. Jewel slides towards the edge of the tailgate and falls off before Blu can reach her. Blu swallows hard and dives off the plane after her. He plummets towards Jewel and grabs onto her. "Blu, you're crazy! What are you doing?!" "I'm not gonna let you go! We're chained-to-each-other birds, remember?" Jewel stares at him... and kisses him as they fall towards the ocean. Blu slowly opens his wings... and flies, just skimming the water, holding Jewel in his talons. "I'm flying! I'm really flying!" He flies them back towards Rio. Marcel wears the parachute as Armando and Tipa hang onto him by his legs, his pants at his ankles. "Idiots.")
Nee: KISS SOME OTHER TIME! FLY NOW
Katney: HE FEELS IT THERE
(Linda, Tulio, and Fernando sit defeated at the airport, until they notice Blu flying towards them with Jewel. Blu lays Jewel on the ground as the humans approach and realize Jewel's injury. Tulio slowly reaches towards Jewel, who recoils until Blu quietly reassures her. "Don't worry, I'll take care of you." Some time later Jewel's wing is healed and she flies out of Tulio's hands from a platform in the jungle, Linda and Fernando standing beside him. A sign nearby reads "Blu Bird Sanctuary" and after a moment with Linda Blu flies off after Jewel. Tulio puts an arm around Linda's shoulder and Fernando joins them smiling after the two macaws. "The End" appears on screen. But first "Real in Rio" is sung again, joined by the main characters as their voice actors' credits appear beside them. Blu and Jewel are joined by three blue macaw chicks and fly towards the sunset with Linda, Tulio, Fernando, and even Luiz on hang gliders.)
Nee: hey that'a the thing she said to blu
Katney: Fly into the sunset...
(In the crashed remains of the plane a very bedraggled Nigel wakes up on the floor in the jungle. A marmoset takes his picture with a stolen camera, revealing he's lost most of his feathers. Credits roll, with pictures of Linda, Tulio, and Fernando on a bicycle built for three; Marcel, Armando, and Tipa in a jail cell; and the grand opening of Linda's book store in Rio among others. Film ends.)
Katney: AND HE'S STILL FREAKIN' ALIVE
Nee: how?!
Katney: Who knows?
Nee: HOW!
Katney: Only the film makers know!! Maybe they say in the sequel
The sequel shall wait for another time... though as of this posting I haven't even seen it yet. ::shrugs:: Next time on the KatNee Movie Date, "Katney's Never Seen 'Big Hero 6'". See ya soon!
