Was a push button transmission a thing in those days? I remember a documentary on the making of Christine and how they had to have a fleet of 58 Plymouth Furys (Furies?) because the push button transmission was really wonky. Or maybe it was another reason, but regardless, all furies were temperamental.
It's a gearbox selector feature which was prominent in lieu of a gear lever in the cars produced by Chrysler from 1957-1963, although Ford had briefly attempted to reverse-engineer that mechanical feature into their short-lived Edsels and marketed them as the "Tele-Touch" Transmission selectors and mounted it in the CENTRE OF THE BLOODY STEERING WHEELS! Which if you don't know what that is, would effectively be regarded as the physical culmination of all corporate hubris, which simply meant that it flopped even harder than a flimsy and soggy carpet...
