Yes, I painted all those scales by hand. Proof that you don't need to completely render every detail for it to look good. A brush stroke goes a long way.

It does! There's a lot of ocular science to back this up, but the short version is your eye doesn't naturally process everything at equal resolution. It focuses on one area and everything around that area is blurry. Add to the equation distance, shadow, atmospheric perspective, etc, and the difference only becomes more drastic. If you render everything in extreme detail across the board, it looks unnatural, because that's not how we see things in the real world.
