Added the ears to the thing. Well, the beginnings of it anyway. I still need to build it up and give it more dimension. I does look a bit big in the photo but it's too bad in real life.
The head itself is getting rather large. My first attempt at the bucket head base was was too small. I used 1/2" thick foam and made it too tight. So I switched to 1" and gave it some room. Plenty of room in fact. My glasses actually fit inside though the chin area is rather snug especially as I glued in some padding so the jaws do move somewhat.
Worked on a few other things like trimming around the back of the eyes and shaping the nostrils to something halfway decent. Need to add the snout ridges and base is just about there. I also added foam extensions to the front of the snoot to flesh it out and fill in the gaps I had. I think it made a huge improvement.
I do like what I have so far. And the method I am using is quite different than the tutorials I seen on the internet. Most of the time it is people building up layers of foam and then trimming it down to shape. Instead of that, I built a "structure" for the upper jaw and just used a single 1/2" thick sheet of foam over it. A lot less trimming and lighter since it uses less foam that way. A big snout like that would have been quite heavy if it was solid foam.
Being an engineer, I figured this way I been using will be be quicker and less messy too. Kinda like how I overlay the paper sheets on that masquerade mask I made for the plague doctor costume for last Halloween. So far, so good.
The back of the head is open with a slit in the foam so I could put the thing on, especially with glasses. I tucked the foam near the neckline so it doesn't have that "bucket head" effect. That made the opening way too small to slide over my big cranium. Thus the split in the back. But I do want it to close up and fit snugly. I am leaning toward using some Velcro strips to hold the flaps together. I feel sewing a zipper is beyond my time constants. Some sort of elastic is a possibility though is stretching out over time might be a future issue.
I plan on throwing some fleece, lining the mouth, and and then figure out what to do about the eyes. The teeth/fangs and horns I probably end up skipping for now.
The skinning and the eyes I feel will just about kill me. I think it'll make or break the head. But at least if I messed up badly, I can rip it off and try to slap another one there. Lets hope it doesn't come to that.
At any rate, I want something presentable for TFF, which is rushing ever closer. Almost a week away. 0.0
If anyone has some ideas or quick tips on finishing it, fire away.
