On any laptops I've had, there are vents for air intake and exhaust to keep the laptop cool. They're often on the side or the bottom, so putting a laptop on a pillow the laptop sinks into the pillow and risks covering the vents and overheating. Usually on notebooks they put the vents below the screen in the hinge, so it isn't as risky as other laptops. I stupidly overheated an old laptop by just leaving it on my couch.
