XiaoLu, Prince of the Xin'an Pond aka Bob the Destroyer
XiaoLu, the Little Green, was a small Eastern dragon that resided in Xin'an Pond in the land of Jiangshan. Xin'an, heart's peace, is a comfortable 4.5 acre pond with exactly eight sandy inlets, two islands with six pine trees between them, and thirty-two rounded rocks, inhabited by around twenty-seven turtles and one-hundred and eighty carp of various colors. XiaoLu called himself a prince, because all dragons are royalty, but he kept a benevolent rule on the pond, counting his denizens every day and making sure they have enough sun or shade or shelter or food to eat. XiaoLu himself mostly ate insects. The carp were his friends, and he could not bear to see them as a meal. The little dragon frequently swam among the carp and they were used to his presence.
Occasionally there would be a disruption to XiaoLu's comfortable existence: a storm, or a drought or some idiot human would try to fish or dump trash in his beloved pond. Then there'd be trees to re-root, rocks to realign, water to add, insects to gather, or people to eat. Frequently however XiaoLu would simply bask on one of the eight inlets and watch the day go by, musing about the nature of the wider world.
And then one day XiaoLu and his carefully tended home were thrown into chaos.
XiaoLu awoke to find himself still in Xin'an pond, but the world outside had changed completely. The wispy, slightly humid mountains and hills of Jiangshan were suddenly replaced by fierce beating sun and the crackling-dry air of a desert. Unknown to the dragon, a wealthy businessman had visited, fallen in love with the pond, and had purchased the XiaoLu's home. Somehow the entire 4.5 acre pond with exactly eight sandy inlets, two islands with six pine trees between them, and thirty-two rounded rocks, inhabited by around twenty-seven turtles and one-hundred and eighty carp of various colors-as well as XiaoLu, the Prince of Xin'an Pond-had been transported en-mass to the businessman's home in Arida Zona, where a whole Jiangshan-themed park had been built around Xin'an Pond.
Needless to say, XiaoLu was not a happy dragon.
A couple of days later, the businessman was enjoying his new acquisition, rowing a boat through HIS pond around HIS favorite island trying to catch and eat HIS carp friends, when XiaoLu finally had enough. Smooth as any serpent, the dragon submerged into the waters. The businessman was idly drinking some wine when he spotted the blur of green heading towards him. He put the bottle down and leaned to take a closer look.
"Eh? What is that thing bobbing over-"
With a roar, XiaoLu lunged out and smashed the boat to pieces before snatching up the businessman and swallowing him whole. The broken wreckage of the businessman's boat drifted aimlessly before XiaoLu kicked the wooden debris out from his beloved pond.
In a short while, people in Arida Zona claimed that the pond was haunted. Fisherman, illegal dumpers, drunken party-goers trying a midnight swim would disappear. Others claimed that the pond was so cursed that throwing coins in for good luck would result in the coins being thrown right back at their head. Some said that people who fed the fish though seemed to have much better luck, with colorful pebbles occasionally washing up beside them. Still, many began to keep a respectful distance.
So XiaoLu continued to tend Xin'an, his 4.5 acre pond with exactly eight sandy inlets, two islands with six pine trees between them, and thirty-two rounded rocks, inhabited by around twenty-seven turtles and one-hundred and eighty carp of various colors, in the middle of the desert that was Arida Zona. He had no idea how to get back to Jiangshan. He wasn't a wizard or anything. Away from his old homeland, XiaoLu decided to rename himself for the new World surrounding his home. He enjoyed the justice of eating that businessman that had disrupted his comfortable life, so he renamed himself Bob. Bob, the destroyer.
Sometimes a storm, or a drought or some idiot human would try to fish or dump trash in his beloved pond. Then there'd be trees to re-root, rocks to realign, water to add, insects to gather, or people to eat. Frequently however Bob would simply bask on one of the eight inlets and watch the day go by, musing about the nature of the wider world.
