Shadi finally decided she had enough of her crappy life and of being beated up by her uncle on a regular basis. She ran off, stole some food and tools to take off her collar, and started wandering the desert. Some guards tried to find her, but returned back after a while, after all no one cared about a small and weak girl.
...the only thing poor Shadi didn't think of was how hard it would be to remove that piece of metal and become free!

No, both her and her uncle (and their whole community in fact) were slaves of a landlord. Still, they were not the typical slaves with shackles and forced to work all day, they were more like serfs who had to give most of their harvest and income to their owner. All they had was a collar to show who they belonged to.
